Monero Deep Dive: The Cryptocurrency To Use If You Want True Anonymity, Far More Anonymous Than Bitcoin

In the early days of cryptocurrency Bitcoin was considered the best payment method for those who wished to stay anonymous. At the time this was true, since Bitcoin required no personal identification information while fiat payment methods like banks and PayPal required a full suite of personal identification information. However, all Bitcoin transactions in history are stored on a publicly accessible block explorer, and with the rise of blockchain forensics it is now possible to figure out who owns a Bitcoin address and what they have been doing with their Bitcoin. Although it is possible to increase Bitcoin’s anonymity by using Tor, VPNs, and CoinJoin, as will be discussed in future Cypherpunk Labs articles, Bitcoin can only be considered pseudo-anonymous rather than fully anonymous.
Nicolas van Saberhagen recognized that Bitcoin lacked full anonymity, in addition to the fact that it is a slow and difficult process to change Bitcoin’s code. Saberhagen proposed to create a new cryptocurrency that was far more anonymous, in addition to correcting some other apparent deficiencies in Bitcoin, and wrote up these ideas in the CryptoNote White Paper.
The first cryptocurrency to utilize the ideas in the CryptoNote White Paper was Bytecoin (BCN), which is a lesser known but still functional stealth cryptocurrency. Bitcointalk user thankful_for_today modified the code from Bytecoin and created BitMonero), but there was community criticism since not everything in the CryptoNote White Paper was adopted. This caused thankful_for_today to apparently abandon the project, but a group of users led by Johny Mnemonic quickly took over and renamed the cryptocurrency Monero (XMR).
One of the most critical pieces of stealth technology that Monero uses is ring signatures. With Bitcoin a transaction is signed with a user’s private key and can be verified with the public key. With a ring signature a transaction is signed by your key as well as the public keys from several other outputs on the blockchain using a triangular distribution method. Essentially, each Monero transaction is signed by a group of keys, and it is not possible to distinguish which key the transaction originated from. This can be thought of as decentralized and trustless mixing, and ultimately ring signatures hide the destination and origin of a transaction.
Eventually Monero upped the ante and implemented ring signature confidential transactions (RingCT), which uses multi-layered linkable spontaneous anonymous group signatures to hide the amount of a transaction. However, RingCT transactions required a large amount of data in order to ensure that the sum of inputs and outputs equaled zero, and bulletproofs were implemented to solve this problem. More about bulletproofs can be read in this paper. Essentially, bulletproofs helped reduce transaction size, lowering transaction fees on the Monero network, and also made it cheaper to create transactions with higher degrees of complexity.
Another critical piece of technology that makes Monero anonymous is stealth addresses. The sender creates a random one-time address for every transaction on behalf of the recipient. This allows a recipient to have just one published address but all of their incoming transactions go to different addresses on the blockchain. Thanks to stealth addresses, only the sender and receiver can determine where a payment was sent, while an outside observer cannot figure that out.
A Monero user can see incoming transactions with their view key, and anyone without the view key cannot see the incoming transactions to any particular address. This view key can be shared, so Monero can be considered optionally transparent, but the default is stealth.
When a Monero user decides to spend their coins, the Monero in a stealth address is broken down into its components and combined with other equivalent components via ring signatures. For example, if 42.42 Monero is sent, then the coins are split into 40 + 2 + 0.4 + 0.02 and combined with other 40’s, 2’s, 0.4’s, and 0.02’s somewhere else in the blockchain. This renders outputs fundamentally indistinguishable, and Unlike Bitcoin’s CoinJoin, no participation from anyone else is needed since already present outputs are being mixed.
Further, Monero tried to increase decentralization of its network by being incompatible with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) via the CryptoNight protocol. This was originally accomplished by requiring a MB of internal memory, which was unacceptable to ASICs at the time. Also, Monero fit into the L3 cache of modern CPUs, while simultaneously being slower on GPUs, hindering the efficiency of GPU mining firms. That being said, it seems if a cryptocurrency is valuable enough then an ASIC is eventually created for it, and the Monero developers have been in a long term battle where they have to periodically change their mining protocol in order to prevent ASICs from overtaking the network. Monero is expected to release their new mining algorithm, RandomX, in October in order to stomp out the ASICs once again.
It seems the Monero developers are succeeding in their fight against ASIC centralization, and generally Monero is the most profitable cryptocurrency to mine on a personal computer while it is not that profitable with ASICs. This is important because it allows regular joes to mine Monero on their personal computer, decentralizing the network hash rate, as opposed to Bitcoin which is practically impossible to mine on a personal computer and most of the hash rate is in the hands of big mining farms.
Also, Monero uses dynamic block sizes, ensuring low transaction fees and fast confirmation times, as opposed to Bitcoin which often has a clogged mempool which can lead to long waits for confirmations and high transaction fees.
Additionally, Monero technically has an infinite supply since the minimum block reward is 0.6 XMR, and this will be reached in 2040. This ensures that miners will always have an incentive to secure the network long term, even if transaction fees are kept as low as possible. Compare this to Bitcoin where block rewards will approach zero, which may wreck the mining community if transaction fees are not high enough.
Thus, Monero’s ring signatures, RingCT, bulletproofs, and stealth addresses combine to obfuscate the sender, receiver, and amount of the transaction, and transactions are split into chunks that are indistinguishable from other transactions. This provides far more privacy than Bitcoin, since Bitcoin transactions are easily traced on a block explorer. It is clear that Monero is an excellent choice for those that want true anonymity when using cryptocurrency. That being said, it is important to use encrypted messaging as well when organizing a Monero transaction, since anonymity can be compromised if a message regarding a Monero transaction is intercepted.

Illiquid markets, such as Bitcoin are easy prey to manipulation. The principle is to draw attention by buying a pretty big quantity (compared to the daily number being bought and sold) and once this attention is drawn, more and more people will start buying trying to jump on the bandwagon and trying not to miss the train. This is on a larger scale exactly what happened in the summer of 2011 when the price of a BTC went all the way up to 30 USD a piece. Such phenomenons normally end up with a massive selloff, (exactly what happened in the above mentioned example when the price went down to 3 usd, losing about 90% of its value) where a lot of late joiners got burned, lost lots of money and abandoned the game saying it's rigged, when the only thing that was rigged was their intelligence. Rallies and inevitable subsequent bubble bursts aren't good for bitcoin. The movement we experienced in the last 2 days (about 7% up) isn't good for bitcoin. What we should need and hope for is a slow movement up, of about say 1-2% each week, due to a growing number of bitcoin adopters and to the fact that this adopters demand SLIGHTLY outpaces the number of bitcoins being sold by miners and people that accept payments in bitcoin but then need to translate those into fiat money. Everything else should be seen as a danger for bitcoin and not cheered as most people do. Rally is bad, not good! We all need to understand that or we will keep being a bunch of goofy beginners easy prey of speculators

I understand, having a unicorn as your avatar, you must be used to animals that actually crap jewels ( unicorns actually do that ). We at Bitfinex unfortunately haven't learnt how to do that yet. The only thing we know is how to transfer money every day to our Bitstamp account. We transfer big chunks of money and we do it every day. Due to the recent cost of Bitcoin it only takes 3k of volume to dry one million usd from our Bitstamp account, so normally in about one hour our Bistamp account is dry again. Then we have to wait another day for another wire to hit our Bitstamp account. Not much we can do about it, we still can't crap money, sorry about that. When the market goes up liquidity is low (that is everybody and his sister is fully invested in BTC) and this is the 238th time I explain this.
My advice to use limit orders wasn't polemical, a limit order is actually the only effective way to avoid slippage and the fact that you call me unprofessional because I gave you an advice doesn't change things. Use limit order or accept slippage, there is no other way out.
The Bitfinex dynamic is not easy to understand, I realize that. But to ask for supernatural things (such as to transfer money we don't physically have because our customers still have to wire it to us) it belongs to the world of unicorns, not to our world.
The only thing I understand is that some people on this forum actually think before writing something, while some others just complain and throw false accusations without even realizing how things actually works. For example blaming the fact that we don't have enough BTC on Bitstamp to justify your loss just shows a complete lack of understanding of the trading mechanisms. The quantity of BTC on Bitstamp have NOTHING TO DO with a short liquidation. 8fold is actually one of the few that understands things and is always on spot with his comments (kudos to him).
And by the way, I'm the only one having an italian name around here, only me not a bunch. And the fact that we are in Honk Kong where ANOTHER company closed down doesn't mean anything, does it? Or shall we say that any company located in Hong Kong or with at least an italian sounding named employee is doomed to go bankrupt? C'mon guys, give me a break!

Let me try to understand what you think it is a valid proof of evidence.... Writing that some non specified "third party" audited our numbers and found nothing wrong with them is something what will re-assure you about our honesty? Don't you think that a statement like this is actually as good as the person writing it? But if the person that writes it is worth your trust, what sense does it make to ask him to state something like this?
Maybe I'm trying to find a logic in something completely illogical (or I'm just really stupid) but I can't give a rational sense to a request like this.
Finally if you had unanswered emails from support on important topics please PM them to me and I'll take care of it.

I understand logic can be taken for arrogance by people that are adverse to being logical. My post asked a very simple question: What does a statement like the following add to being more trustworthy?
A third party (non specified) performed a check on our Bitcoins and found we actually have them. No additional details will be given.
My point was that in order to trust a statement like this you must trust the source of the above statement. But if you trust the source ( whose statement doesn't add any proof of evidence into the equation ) then to ask for such a statement doesn't make sense.
Call it arrogance, I call it logic.

Transparency doesn't mean to spend time in justifying ourselves against allegations that don't make sense. MatTheTwat is blaming Bitfinex because his stop order wasn't executed at the price he selected. Now even a 5 years old retard knows that a stop loss order is executed at the best price available in that given time. It is not our fault if other ask orders were pulled when the price started to go up. This is normal as several bots are programmed in such a way, i.e. withdraw orders when the price spikes up. To blame this on the platform, accusing people to deliberately steal 30 usd is not only a symptom of douchebagness, but also of the fact that his IQ is smaller than his shoe size. I can trace the guys that had the ask orders placed and pulled them off when the price started to raise. They can come on this thread and witness that nothing is wrong with this particular case. But as I said nobody does nothing for free and I want the Twat to be exposed to his own stupidity. He has a good opportunity to make a lot of coins if he's right ( he's not). But kids like him never make facts follow their words, they are just a whisper in the wind.

Realcoin became Tether. You can find all the infos you need here: www.tether.to It's still in beta now, but it will soon launch. We as Bitfinex will adopt it and I believe a few other trading platforms will do the same ( Huobi, Okcoin etc.). Not sure about Bitstamp, but they probably will at the end if adoption goes well......

Due to Bitcoin community stupidity, and on-going scalability problems of the Bitcoin Network, I have decided to sell a large chunk of my Bitcoin holdings for a combination of cash, Dash and Ethereum (mostly Dash)
This came after few days ago several of my Bitcoin transactions took 3 hours to complete rather than 10 minutes normally (and one transaction took as long as 26 (!!!) hours to complete due to an artificially limited block size in Bitcoin.
I see the problem as a very fundamental problem in the Bitcoin network, that might resolve itself, or it might not. In which case bitcoin Network will go the Way of The Nokia. There is a theoretical technical solution to this problem (just like Nokia could turn-around itself during 2011/2012 era, but didn't), but politics and dumbness of the Bitcoin community prevent solution from happening.

I was aware of Dash since 2014 (Darkcoin back then), but didn't pay too much attention, because it's only feature over Bitcoin at the time was coin-mixing, a feature I wasn't interested in, at the time.
When did other features appeared ?
Additionally, I'm willing to invest in Dash-Electrum development. (Since I'm a Bitcoin Electrum user right now, and like SPV light wallets in general) How is that proceeding, and what it's status ? Would a donation help to develop it faster ?
For me, the Bitcoin slow transaction debacle is a catastrophe, but perhaps also a new beginning...

Most expensive gamble (and mistake) of my life... my LTC / ETH journey

I finally decided to make a move into coins this summer, I had some savings, had been watching Bitcoin for years and years, and decided the time was now. Litecoin got on my radar about two years back and I nearly bought some, but Coinbase didn't get me approved as quickly as I expected and I forgot about it.
Fast forward to this summer, I finally bought my first coins, and I started with a purchase of around $1,500. I started off buying in the 20s right before the rise, and then mixed in some Ethereum as well. I kept buying on the way up, settled with a nice chunk of each when the first crash happened. I felt sick, was full of worry, but decided to ride it out given that there wasn't a whole lot of doomsday news to support it outside of the Bitcoin fork.
I continued buying, ultimately ending with over $45,000 of my very hard earned money in the LTC and ETH markets (~70% LTC to ~30% ETH). My last purchase was around the high 70s, thinking that $100 was near, then the past few days happened.
Now the Chase thing upset me, and I knew it would hurt, so I rode it out. Then the exchange closing news happened, I still tried to keep cool. This morning though killed me, I was up late, checked the market one last time and saw the insanely steep decline down into the 40s then 30s (with ETH also hurting bad), and sat up for an hour and a half reading all I could to figure out what was up. More exchanges leaving, lots of sarcasm and pessimism with no real hope outside of HODL memes, and I just crumbled. I sold everything, walking away with only $23,000 of that $45,000.
I have felt sick to my stomach all day, could hardly sleep, have felt even like I was going to pass out after seeing the rally up. This loss won't kill me financially, I'm not going to be homeless, but the experience all summer was a pure rollercoaster of emotions (had highs, and lows) and this was just crushing. I always had confidence in the rises and falls, I saw many small ones, and now two big ones, but the fluctuation of this size and the real-time minute by minute loss of my money in the thousands just got to me too much. It was frustrating to see even Charlie not really speaking words of confidence in his own coin. One of the last things I looked at was his Twitter before selling, and he was just contributing to the fear talking about other exchanges shutting down.
I do ask that you please don't tear me apart, I already feel terrible and depressed enough seeing that right after I sold there was a crazy rally back up. I sat there asking why that couldn't have happened while I sat there real time seeing everything on a hard slide down, but I missed the signs of hope no joke by like 30 minutes. What's done is done, and I'm not sure I'll ever convince myself to come back. I thought maybe I'd buy back in at $20 but at this point I don't think we'll see the day. Maybe $30s will come back, but there are bigger forces at play to ensure that the funds simply won't bottom out (i.e. really rich people buying up the lows like crazy with big money). I'm certainly not coming back in at the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. I'm probably done for good.
I will say as someone that feels very frustrated by the process that one of the most irritating things of all is that I went into this thinking that BTC, ETH, and LTC had their own legs to stand on, but as I've watched these charts they've been ridiculously tied together. It's almost as if people have systems in place to buy and sell the big 3 at the same time, there's very rarely a rise or a dip that doesn't directly show on each other chart just the same. What's up with that? When Samsung phones were blowing up we didn't see HTC or Apple take a hit. That was really just the most disappointing thing about this, I went into it thinking that if Bitcoin ever crashed or even if the fork was problematic that LTC and ETH would have more appeal, when all I got were micro versions of bitcoins and the rises and falls of bitcoins just the same. :/
I know I was stupid for selling when I did, but I already saw huge losses as it was. I was expecting a crash like we saw with Bitcoin when it went from $1,000 to $200-300 for over a year. Obviously things still haven't settled here, but things seem more stable than they were back then so far. If you think there's any reason to come back in at any point I'm all ears, but with the $23,000 I have left and the loss weighing on my shoulders I really just think I should just drop it into an S&P 500 fund and try to forget about this painful experience. I'm crushed inside, I really am, easily one of the worst days of my life.

There was nothing particularly new or revealing in his messages - just more of the same stuff we've all heard before. I have no idea why he prefers responding to me privately these days.
Everything below is written by me - I haven't tried to upload his 2 PMs to me, since he didn't give permission (and I didn't ask). The only stuff below from his 2 PMs is the 3 phrases already mentioned: "340GB", "paid off", and "integrity". The rest of this long wall of text is just my "open letter to Greg."
TL;DR: The code that maximally uses the available hardware and infrastructure will win - and there is nothing Core/Blockstream can do to stop that. Also, things like the Berlin Wall or the Soviet Union lasted for a lot longer than people expected - but, conversely, the also got swept away a lot faster than anyone expected. The "vote" for bigger blocks is an ongoing referendum - and Classic is running on 20-25% of the network (and can and will jump up to the needed 75% very fast, when investors demand it due to the inevitable "congestion crisis") - which must be a massive worry for Greg/Adam/Austin and their backers from the Bilderberg Group. The debate will inevitably be decided in favor of bigger blocks - simply because the market demands it, and the hardware / infrastructure supports it.

Thank you for your private messages in response to my post.
I respect (most of) your work on Bitcoin, but I think you were wrong on several major points in your messages, and in your overall economic approach to Bitcoin - as I explain in greater detail below:
Correcting some inappropriate terminology you used
As everybody knows, Classic or Unlimited or Adaptive (all of which I did mention specifically in my post) do not support "340GB" blocks (which I did not mention in my post).
It is therefore a straw-man for you to claim that big-block supporters want "340GB" blocks. Craig Wright may want that - but nobody else supports his crazy posturing and ridiculous ideas.
You should know that what actual users / investors (and Satoshi) actually do want, is to let the market and the infrastructure decide on the size of actual blocks - which could be around 2 MB, or 4 MB, etc. - gradually growing in accordance with market needs and infrastructure capabilities (free from any arbitrary, artificial central planning and obstructionism on the part of Core/Blockstream, and its investors - many of whom have a vested interest in maintaining the current debt-backed fiat system).
You yourself (nullc) once said somewhere that bigger blocks would probably be fine - ie, they would not pose a decentralization risk. (I can't find the link now - maybe I'll have time to look for it later.) I found the link:

I am also surprised that you now seem to be among those making unfounded insinuations that posters such as myself must somehow be "paid off" - as if intelligent observers and participants could not decide on their own, based on the empirical evidence, that bigger blocks are needed, when the network is obviously becoming congested and additional infrastructure is obviously available.
Random posters on Reddit might say and believe such conspiratorial nonsense - but I had always thought that you, given your intellectual abilities, would have been able to determine that people like me are able to arrive at supporting bigger blocks quite entirely on our own, based on two simple empirical facts, ie:
  • the infrastructure supports bigger blocks now;
  • the market needs bigger blocks now.
In the present case, I will simply assume that you might be having a bad day, for you to erroneously and groundlessly insinuate that I must be "paid off" in order to support bigger blocks.
Using Occam's Razor
The much simpler explanation is that bigger-block supporters believe will get "paid off" from bigger gains for their investment in Bitcoin.
Rational investors and users understand that bigger blocks are necessary, based on the apparent correlation (not necessarily causation!) between volume and price (as mentioned in my other post, and backed up with graphs).
And rational network capacity planners (a group which you should be in - but for some mysterious reason, you're not) also understand that bigger blocks are necessary, and quite feasible (and do not pose any undue "centralization risk".)
As I have been on the record for months publicly stating, I understand that bigger blocks are necessary based on the following two objective, rational reasons:
  • because I've seen the graphs; and
  • because I've seen the empirical research in the field (from guys like Gavin and Toomim) showing that the network infrastructure (primarily bandwidth and latency - but also RAM and CPU) would also support bigger blocks now (I believe they showed that 3-4MB blocks would definitely work fine on the network now - possibly even 8 MB - without causing undue centralization).
Bigger-block supporters are being objective; smaller-block supporters are not
I am surprised that you no longer talk about this debate in those kind of objective terms:
  • bandwidth, latency (including Great Firewall of China), RAM, CPU;
  • centralization risk
Those are really the only considerations which we should be discussing in this debate - because those are the only rational considerations which might justify the argument for keeping 1 MB.
And yet you, and Adam Back adam3us, and your company Blockstream (financed by the Bilderberg Group, which has significant overlap with central banks and the legacy, debt-based, violence-backed fiat money system that has been running and slowing destroying our world) never make such objective, technical arguments anymore.
And when you make unfounded conspiratorial, insulting insinuations saying people who disagree with you on the facts must somehow be "paid off", then you are now talking like some "nobody" on Reddit - making wild baseless accusations that people must be "paid off" to support bigger blocks, something I had always thought was "beneath" you.
Instead, Occams's Razor suggests that people who support bigger blocks are merely doing so out of:
  • simple, rational investment policy; and
  • simple, rational capacity planning.
At this point, the burden is on guys like you (nullc) to explain why you support a so-called scaling "roadmap" which is not aligned with:
  • simple, rational investment policy; and
  • simple, rational capacity planning
The burden is also on guys like you to show that you do not have a conflict of interest, due to Blockstream's highly-publicized connections (via insurance giant AXA - whose CED is also the Chairman of the Bilderberg Group; and companies such as the "Big 4" accounting firm PwC) to the global cartel of debt-based central banks with their infinite money-printing.
In a nutshell, the argument of big-block supporters is simple:
If the hardware / network infrastructure supports bigger blocks (and it does), and if the market demands it (and it does), then we certainly should use bigger blocks - now.
You have never provided a counter-argument to this simple, rational proposition - for the past few years.
If you have actual numbers or evidence or facts or even legitimate concerns (regarding "centralization risk" - presumably your only argument) then you should show such evidence.
But you never have. So we can only assume either incompetence or malfeasance on your part.
As I have also publicly and privately stated to you many times, with the utmost of sincerity: We do of course appreciate the wealth of stellar coding skills which you bring to Bitcoin's cryptographic and networking aspects.
But we do not appreciate the obstructionism and centralization which you also bring to Bitcoin's economic and scaling aspects.
Bitcoin is bigger than you.
The simple reality is this: If you can't / won't let Bitcoin grow naturally, then the market is going to eventually route around you, and billions (eventually trillions) of investor capital and user payments will naturally flow elsewhere.
So: You can either be the guy who wrote the software to provide simple and safe Bitcoin scaling (while maintaining "reasonable" decentralization) - or the guy who didn't.
The choice is yours.
The market, and history, don't really care about:
  • which "side" you (nullc) might be on, or
  • whether you yourself might have been "paid off" (or under a non-disclosure agreement written perhaps by some investors associated the Bilderberg Group and the legacy debt-based fiat money system which they support), or
  • whether or not you might be clueless about economics.
Crypto and/or Bitcoin will move on - with or without you and your obstructionism.
Bigger-block supporters, including myself, are impartial
By the way, my two recent posts this past week on the Craig Wright extravaganza...
...should have given you some indication that I am being impartial and objective, and I do have "integrity" (and I am not "paid off" by anybody, as you so insultingly insinuated).
In other words, much like the market and investors, I don't care who provides bigger blocks - whether it would be Core/Blockstream, or Bitcoin Classic, or (the perhaps confusingly-named) "Bitcoin Unlimited" (which isn't necessarily about some kind of "unlimited" blocksize, but rather simply about liberating users and miners from being "limited" by controls imposed by any centralized group of developers, such as Core/Blockstream and the Bilderbergers who fund you).
So, it should be clear by now I don't care one way or the other about Gavin personally - or about you, or about any other coders.
I care about code, and arguments - regardless of who is providing such things - eg:
  • When Gavin didn't demand crypto proof from Craig, and you said you would have: I publicly criticized Gavin - and I supported you.
  • When you continue to impose needless obstactles to bigger blocks, then I continue to criticize you.
In other words, as we all know, it's not about the people.
It's about the code - and what the market wants, and what the infrastructure will bear.
You of all people should know that that's how these things should be decided.
Fortunately, we can take what we need, and throw away the rest.
Your crypto/networking expertise is appreciated; your dictating of economic parameters is not.
As I have also repeatedly stated in the past, I pretty much support everything coming from you, nullc:
  • your crypto and networking and game-theoretical expertise,
  • your extremely important work on Confidential Transactions / homomorphic encryption.
  • your desire to keep Bitcoin decentralized.
And I (and the network, and the market/investors) will always thank you profusely and quite sincerely for these massive contributions which you make.
But open-source code is (fortunately) à la carte. It's mix-and-match. We can use your crypto and networking code (which is great) - and we can reject your cripple-code (artificially small 1 MB blocks), throwing it where it belongs: in the garbage heap of history.
So I hope you see that I am being rational and objective about what I support (the code) - and that I am also always neutral and impartial regarding who may (or may not) provide it.
And by the way: Bitcoin is actually not as complicated as certain people make it out to be.
This is another point which might be lost on certain people, including:

The crypto code behind Bitcoin actually is very simple.
And the networking code behind Bitcoin is actually also fairly simple as well.
Right now you may be feeling rather important and special, because you're part of the first wave of development of cryptocurrencies.
But if the cryptocurrency which you're coding (Core/Blockstream's version of Bitcoin, as funded by the Bilderberg Group) fails to deliver what investors want, then investors will dump you so fast your head will spin.
Investors care about money, not code.
So bigger blocks will eventually, inevitably come - simply because the market demand is there, and the infrastructure capacity is there.
It might be nice if bigger blocks would come from Core/Blockstream.
But who knows - it might actually be nicer (in terms of anti-fragility and decentralization of development) if bigger blocks were to come from someone other than Core/Blockstream.
So I'm really not begging you - I'm warning you, for your own benefit (your reputation and place in history), that:
Either way, we are going to get bigger blocks.
Simply because the market wants them, and the hardware / infrastructre can provide them.
And there is nothing you can do to stop us.
So the market will inevitably adopt bigger blocks either with or without you guys - given that the crypto and networking tech behind Bitcoin is not all that complex, and it's open-source, and there is massive pent-up investor demand for cryptocurrency - to the tune of multiple billions (or eventually trillions) of dollars.
It ain't over till the fat lady sings.
Regarding the "success" which certain small-block supports are (prematurely) gloating about, during this time when a hard-fork has not happened yet: they should bear in mind that the market has only begun to speak.
And the first thing it did when it spoke was to dump about 20-25% of Core/Blockstream nodes in a matter of weeks. (And the next thing it did was Gemini added Ethereum trading.)
So a sizable percentage of nodes are already using Classic. Despite desperate, irrelevant attempts of certain posters on these forums to "spin" the current situation as a "win" for Core - it is actually a major "fail" for Core.
Because if Core/Blocksteam were not "blocking" Bitcoin's natural, organic growth with that crappy little line of temporary anti-spam kludge-code which you and your minions have refused to delete despite Satoshi explicitly telling you to back in 2010 ("MAX_BLOCKSIZE = 1000000"), then there would be something close to 0% nodes running Classic - not 25% (and many more addable at the drop of a hat).
This vote is ongoing.
This "voting" is not like a normal vote in a national election, which is over in one day.
Unfortunately for Core/Blockstream, the "voting" for Classic and against Core is actually two-year-long referendum.
It is still ongoing, and it can rapidly swing in favor of Classic at any time between now and Classic's install-by date (around January 1, 2018 I believe) - at any point when the market decides that it needs and wants bigger blocks (ie, due to a congestion crisis).
You know this, Adam Back knows this, Austin Hill knows this, and some of your brainwashed supporters on censored forums probably know this too.
This is probably the main reason why you're all so freaked out and feel the need to even respond to us unwashed bigger-block supporters, instead of simply ignoring us.
This is probably the main reason why Adam Back feels the need to keep flying around the world, holding meetings with miners, making PowerPoint presentations in English and Chinese, and possibly also making secret deals behind the scenes.
This is also why Theymos feels the need to censor.
And this is perhaps also why your brainwashed supporters from censored forums feel the need to constantly make their juvenile, content-free, drive-by comments (and perhaps also why you evidently feel the need to privately message me your own comments now).
Because, once again, for the umpteenth time in years, you've seen that we are not going away.
Every day you get another worrisome, painful reminder from us that Classic is still running on 25% of "your" network.
And everyday get another worrisome, painful reminder that Classic could easily jump to 75% in a matter of days - as soon as investors see their $7 billion wealth starting to evaporate when the network goes into a congestion crisis due to your obstructionism and insistence on artificially small 1 MB blocks.
If your code were good enough to stand on its own, then all of Core's globetrotting and campaigning and censorship would be necessary.
But you know, and everyone else knows, that your cripple-code does not include simple and safe scaling - and the competing code (Classic, Unlimited) does.
So your code cannot stand on its own - and that's why you and your supporters feel that it's necessary to keep up the censorship and and the lies and the snark. It's shameful that a smart coder like you would be involved with such tactics.
Oppressive regimes always last longer than everyone expects - but they also also collapse faster than anyone expects.
We already have interesting historical precedents showing how grassroots resistance to centralized oppression and obstructionism tends to work out in the end. The phenomenon is two-fold:
  • The oppression usually drags on much longer than anyone expects; and
  • The liberation usually happens quite abruptly - much faster than anyone expects.
The Berlin Wall stayed up much longer than everyone expected - but it also came tumbling down much faster than everyone expected.
Examples of opporessive regimes that held on surprisingly long, and collapsed surpisingly fast, are rather common - eg, the collapse of the Berlin Wall, or the collapse of the Soviet Union.
(Both examples are actually quite germane to the case of Blockstream/Core/Theymos - as those despotic regimes were also held together by the fragile chewing gum and paper clips of denialism and censorship, and the brainwashed but ultimately complacent and fragile yes-men that inevitably arise in such an environment.)
The Berlin Wall did indeed seem like it would never come down. But the grassroots resistance against it was always there, in the wings, chipping away at the oppression, trying to break free.
And then when it did come down, it happened in a matter of days - much faster than anyone had expected.
That's generally how these things tend to go:
  • oppression and obstructionism drag on forever, and the people oppressing freedom and progress erroneously believe that Core/Blockstream is "winning" (in this case: Blockstream/Core and you and Adam and Austin - and the clueless yes-men on censored forums like r\bitcoin who mindlessly support you, and the obedient Chinese miners who, thus far, have apparently been to polite to oppose you) ;
  • then one fine day, the market (or society) mysteriously and abruptly decides one day that "enough is enough" - and the tsunami comes in and washes the oppressors away in the blink of an eye.
So all these non-entities with their drive-by comments on these threads and their premature gloating and triumphalism are irrelevant in the long term.
The only thing that really matters is investors and users - who are continually applying grassroots pressure on the network, demanding increased capacity to keep the transactions flowing (and the price rising).
And then one day: the Berlin Wall comes tumbling down - or in the case of Bitcoin: a bunch of mining pools have to switch to Classic, and they will do switch so fast it will make your head spin.
Because there will be an emergency congestion crisis where the network is causing the price to crash and threatening to destroy $7 billion in investor wealth.
So it is understandable that your supports might sometimes prematurely gloat, or you might feel the need to try to comment publicly or privately, or Adam might feel the need to jet around the world.
Because a large chunk of people have rejected your code.
And because many more can and will - and they'll do in the blink of an eye.
Classic is still out there, "waiting in the wings", ready to be installed, whenever the investors tell the miners that it is needed.
Fortunately for big-block supporters, in this "election", the polls don't stay open for just one day, like in national elections.
The voting for Classic is on-going - it runs for two years. It is happening now, and it will continue to happen until around January 1, 2018 (which is when Classic-as-an-option has been set to officially "expire").
To make a weird comparison with American presidential politics: It's kinda like if either Hillary or Trump were already in office - but meanwhile there was also an ongoing election (where people could change their votes as often as they want), and the day when people got fed up with the incompetent incumbent, they can throw them out (and install someone like Bernie instead) in the blink of an eye.
So while the inertia does favor the incumbent (because people are lazy: it takes them a while to become informed, or fed up, or panicked), this kind of long-running, basically never-ending election favors the insurgent (because once the incumbent visibly screws up, the insurgent gets adopted - permanently).
Everyone knows that Satoshi explicitly defined Bitcoin to be a voting system, in and of itself. Not only does the network vote on which valid block to append next to the chain - the network also votes on the very definition of what a "valid block" is.
Go ahead and re-read the anonymous PDF that was recently posted on the subject of how you are dangerously centralizing Bitcoin by trying to prevent any votes from taking place:

The insurgent (Classic, Unlimited) is right (they maximally use available bandwidth) - while the incumbent (Core) is wrong (it needlessly throws bandwidth out the window, choking the network, suppressing volume, and hurting the price).
And you, and Adam, and Austin Hill - and your funders from the Bilderberg Group - must be freaking out that there is no way you can get rid of Classic (due to the open-source nature of cryptocurrency and Bitcoin).
Cripple-code will always be rejected by the network.
Classic is already running on about 20%-25% of nodes, and there is nothing you can do to stop it - except commenting on these threads, or having guys like Adam flying around the world doing PowerPoints, etc.
Everything you do is irrelevant when compared against billions of dollars in current wealth (and possibly trillions more down the road) which needs and wants and will get bigger blocks.
You guys no longer even make technical arguments against bigger blocks - because there are none: Classic's codebase is 99% the same as Core, except with bigger blocks.
So when we do finally get bigger blocks, we will get them very, very fast: because it only takes a few hours to upgrade the software to keep all the good crypto and networking code that Core/Blockstream wrote - while tossing that single line of 1 MB "max blocksize" cripple-code from Core/Blockstream into the dustbin of history - just like people did with the Berlin Wall.

[OC] Nineteen thousand

“Whiskey and water. Leave the bottle.”
The bartender produced the required glassware along with a flask of amber fluid, but made no move to open it and continue the procedure. After a few seconds of letting him stare at me, I sighed and dug out a bitcoin spear, twirling it between my fingers letting it drop onto the counter. The bartender performed a magic trick and made it disappear into a reader, eyebrows threatening to climb off his bald head at the number of zeroes on the tiny screen. Cash on the barrelhead always trumped whatever initial impression I made when walking into a new place.
Quick as a wink the previous bottle was replaced with something a bit more top shelf - probably from his private stash - along with a bowl of cashews and dried wasabi peas. I didn’t care, top shelf was probably more than I deserved. Not that I was about to turn down the wasabi peas, mind you - they just weren’t the reason I came here. I was here to drink.
And drink I did. A lot. A sip of whiskey each for those that marched in didn’t make it back out. Nineteen thousand brave men and women who went to the wall and held it, held it hard, just so that the rest of the world could keep on living. Heros each and every one of the, the best and finest soldiers I had ever served with.
All dead. All dead. All because they followed me.
The face that stared back at me from the mirror over the bar looked nothing like the man I remembered. This one had a haunted look of someone who had seen too much and couldn’t sleep afterwards. A man who drank to excess in an effort to forget and was failing miserably at it, but kept trying anyways. A man that led his troops into battle and wound up most of them killed. A man who stumbled out of the war zone, gathered up what was left, and led the charge back in. A man who sacrificed the finest men and women on the planet, but got the job done and lived to talk about it.
I hated the man that looked back at me. I hated the fact he had been showered with medals and commendations and called a goddamn hero. He - I - didn’t deserve any of it. The ones that did got nothing but their name on a wall and an email full of platitudes to their families back home. A pittance to remember someone like Private Alimah Kerr, screaming as she unloaded her service weapon into the face of the thing that was chewing her leg off. Or Specialist Robert Hue who stood his ground as the aliens advanced, refusing to yield until he too disappeared under a wave of slobbering blue-green flesh before finally detonating his remaining grenades.
The finest Humanity had to offer. And nobody to remember them but me and a handful of others that had walked away and then paraded in front of the media. Bastards, each and every one of us. Especially me.
Survivor's guilt, they called it. The shrinks tried to convince me that I wasn’t at fault, but I knew better. They hadn’t been there, up close and personal with the aliens that came pouring through the gateway, howling and screaming for Human blood. Every single last one of them a whirling murder machine, all legs and claws and teeth, a dripping nightmare from the depths of hell. The good thing was they died just as easy as we did - only there was a lot more of them.
The gateway had been yet-another attempt to create a working FTL system. In that regard, it is was a roaring success - and if the creator had survived the initial incursion, he would have won a Nobel Prize. Instead he became xeno chow along with rest of the scientists. The idiot never considered that there might be something waiting for us on the other side, ready to jump through and start fucking things up. Without thinking, he just opened a goddamn doorway to hell and invited the bastards in, leaving the rest of us to fight our way towards the portal and slam the thing shut before something worse came through.
We won, of course. But it was a victory bought and paid for dearly, one bloody step at a time.
I continued to drink, mentally calling out names with each sip. Victoria Smith. Mark Belzar. Sigivald Elwin. Andy Paz. I had memorized each of the nineteen thousand I led into battle and then left behind. Good men and women. I wish I could count myself among them. Instead I was left with nothing but their names and a fat bank account, courtesy of early retirement. That, and the memory of how I had took them right up to the gates of hell and told them to keep going. Their great commanding officer, the one they looked up to and expected to bring them home, safe and sound. But in the end, I wound up escorting them right to the gates of hell. If it made any difference I was right there with them, every step of the way. Lead from the front was always my motto. Do as I do, like this, here, you try. They loved me for it, and I loved them back, all of them. One big trigger-happy family.
I waved at the bartender for another bottle, and he swapped out the empty one for me, setting another decanter of water next to it. I refreshed my glass and snorted at the label. “None Better” it proclaimed, in flowing gold script, winner of the ‘52 international. Perhaps. I couldn’t tell - it all went down the same, burning a line from my mouth to my gut like a tracer bullet. The soft bloom of warmth when it hit was a welcome relief, dulling the pain. If only it could dull the memory of what happened.
We had been out doing maneuvers - mostly a show of force to remind everyone that the UN was serious about keeping the peace - when we got an alert indicating a hostile force at a nearby research complex. The day had been going good and I was pleased with how the troops were performing and gave the order to re-task and take back the facility. I assumed it was yet another terrorist action, a bunch of fucking losers following some jackass who thought he was the seconding coming and wanted to prove it by blowing shit up and lopping off heads. What those guys hope to accomplish by all of that is beyond me. Still, they always seemed to be able to gather supporters from those that had nothing else better to do. I guess vague promises of a glowing afterlife was better than dirty villages and crappy TV.
On the surface it seemed like a run-of-the-mill op, just like all the others that we’ve been doing since the UNSOF was formed. Somehow the insurgents had managed to slip in and take over the lab before anyone noticed - which meant overwatch had been slacking off and needed a kick in the ass. I figured it would all be over pretty soon and the grunts could look forward to some well-deserved R’n’R afterwards while us command-types filled out paperwork. Just another day at the office, one step closer to retirement and that 30-foot boat I’d been daydreaming about. A little shock and awe and everything would be right on our corner of the world. Give the kids something to bullshit the starry-eyed civvies with back in town, maybe enough to impress the locals to come back their place and get all sticky together. I was just glad we mandated strict birth control, religious and cultural affiliations be dammed.
The first indication it was not a terrorist group was when the incursion team breached the outer doors and started screaming. The whirling mass of death that came storming out tore into the team like a starving man at a buffet. To their credit, they stood their ground and gave as good as they got until backup arrived and provided supporting fire, splattering the shit out of whatever it was before recovering our dead and wounded.
I gave the order to move in and secure the facility, assuming that whatever had torn Alpha team to ribbons was some unsanctioned animal experiment that got loose. It was only after we lost both Bravo and Charlie did we realize it wasn’t animals we were dealing with but a whole new life form, one that really enjoyed snacking on humans. By the time the rest of the division showed up to provide much-needed support we were down to less than a hundred functioning soldiers and had nothing to show for it.
The UNSOF trained and outfitted some of the best soldiers on the planet, and we were experts at enforcing the peace or dealing with the odd armed insurgent, but an actual alien invasion was a little outside of our bailiwick. But we were also never one to back down from a fight, especially one where the fate of the world hung in the balance. The extra firepower allowed us to force our way through the swarms of aliens that just kept coming and coming. Sergeant Iva Magdalene joked with Private Sam Lammert that it was like some sort of video game and wondered if there was a boss level. That was the last coherent thing I heard from her team, screaming and the sound of gunfire saturating the radio channel shortly afterwards.
The bar was starting to fill up, the afternoon working class crowd shouldering their way in and talking loud. Friends backslapping each other, yapping about sports or the latest movie or how the new foreman was an idiot. I ignored them and stayed on my perch, nailed there by a continual supply of whiskey and spicy dried peas. I blinked and the empty bottle magically replaced itself, the bartender swapping it out as he moved by. I took that as a good sign and poured myself another, sipping it as I mentally counted out the names.
Afonso Lefteris. Castor Theudemar. Rodrigo Neely. Arcadia Frantziska. Coco Yana. Lesha Teagan. Dan Dorin. Cassandra Goldburg. All gone, just names on a wall somewhere now, destined to be part of a school field trip where bored kids stand around and fidget as their teacher tries to jam some history between their dirty ears. Not one of those kids or their teacher will care Cassandra wrote dirty Harry Potter vampire fan fiction, Rodrigo had been studying to be a lawyer, or that Dan moonlighted as a classical guitarist. Each one had a future and a life ahead of them that was wiped out when I sent them off to die.
And every last one of them went willingly. Confident, strong, proud. A credit to the uniform. A uniform I no longer felt that I had the right to wear.
I set my empty glass down with exaggerated care, uncertain of where the tabletop was, my enhanced liver working overtime to process the influx of alcohol. The thunk told me I had made it successfully, and I let go of the glass and stared into it, the slowly collapsing film of whiskey that clung to the side a reminder of the gateway at the epicenter of the invasion.
The egg-shaped device looked like wet glass, the distortion rippling between complicated armatures keeping the field open. It had taken six hours of constant fighting, some of it hand-to-hand, before we gained access to the chamber housing the gateway. Behind us we had left a trail of bodies, both ours and theirs, some of them stacked three deep. The stench of death mixed with the smell of cordite and burnt railgun coils. I had lost track of my own weapon some point, picking up a discard and using that instead. The stock was crusted in dried blood, some of it mine, most of it alien where I had used it as a club. My continual requests for more support and heavy equipment were being shuffled around and put off, nobody willing to believe the reports being sent in. Those of us on the ground were resolved to end this here and now, holding the first, last, and only line of defence between Humanity and the growling alien mob.
By this point we had all gotten pretty good at figuring out what the alien’s weak points were - head shots fucked them up pretty good, but they’d just barrel along until you took out the heart-thing located in their ass. Someone told me later they were like bees, putting their vital bits in back and responding to a queen. I stopped eating honey right after that.
Being more efficient at killing was not that helpful when the enemy force seemed to have an unlimited supply of bodies to throw at us. At some point we were going to run out of ammo - we had been scavenging what we could off of our dead comrades, exhaustion and terror keeping us from feeling bad about it. I kept sending soldiers out in twos and threes to search the surrounding areas and bring back what they could. Sometimes they came back missing a team member. Sometimes they didn’t come back at all.
I added them to the list of dead that I was responsible for and kept pushing forward.
The bartender came over and gave me a look, judging if I was at the point where he should consider cutting me off. I held out my hand to show that it was steady - surgeon's hands, my mother called them - and nodded, my fancy liver having already dealt with the booze. He reluctantly complied and poured a drink for me from a new bottle - my third, I think - before moving down the bar to take care of someone else.
I kept drinking and counting off the names.
Our first clue we were getting closer to the center of the invasion was a change in the mix of xeno types. Before it was just nasty critters that would attack en-masse, but these were more upright and started to sport weapons of their own. They also started to show a level of unit cohesion that was downright disturbing. We figured out pretty quickly that they were also responsible for directing the mass of smaller xenos, so killing them became a top priority. Same general body layout as the rest, so popping a round in their ass worked wonders.
By this time we had finally figured out what the hell this place was and command had bought into our doomsday scenario - but were seemingly incapable of making a decision on what to do about it. I lost three men - Williams, Carine, and Renáta - as I hunkered down and got into a screaming match over the vidphone with a four-star general who had never seen live action before. It was only until I broke off to club a snarling mass of alien flesh that tried to eat my face did they get the message how dire the situation was. Nuclear weapons were off the table - even if we could get the release codes, the fallout would poison a large chunk of valuable farmland and wreck the underlying aquifer. The only available units with bunker busters or MOABs were hours away, about the same time as any heavy artillery that could punch through the walls.
That left us with jack and shit, along with a dwindling number of functional soldiers who were running short on ammo and adrenaline.
So we did what we were trained to do - we kept fighting.
And kept dying.
My upgraded liver had finally done its job and processed most of what I drank into hydrogen and energy, feeding a process that cracked the rest into more base components my body could use. Very little alcohol actually made it into my bloodstream, and what did was filtered out quickly and excreted in the normal manner. The upshot was I could generally keep drinking for as long as my bank account held out - which these days meant practically forever.
One side effect of the upgrades is that I tend to sweat more than normal when I drink, which is hell on my clothing and contributes to the sad state of my personal hygiene. I honestly don’t care - that’s what laundry service is for. As for the smell, it kept the seats next to me clear, which let me focus on more important things. Like drinking and remembering the dead.
So when someone invaded my personal space by sitting down and greeting me by name, I was totally unprepared.
Fuck. Robbie.
The promised support was going to be a long time in coming - most of what we needed were scattered around maintaining the peace or on a ship somewhere. Nobody expected some idiot to throw a complete division of troops and material into a meat grinder and then ask for more.
We knew we were in the right area when we killed a dozen of the Walkers - what we started calling the upright fighters - all stationed around a hanger-like door that had been forced open from the inside. A quick peek around the corner showed the room inside was filled with critters of various sizes, all milling around the gateway that kept pooping out more. I could see a dozen or more Walkers arranged in front of it, gathered in a loose circle and waving their hand-things around in some sort of ritual fashion. I didn’t know if they were holding a seance and talking with Great Uncle Charley or just discussing the weather, and frankly I didn’t care - I just wanted them out of the way of our objective. Once we shut the gateway down I was certain that all of our problems would be solved and we could call it a day. Maybe even get out this in time for dinner.
“Eugen, Pyotr. Take a squad each and scout left and right of our position. Look for power conduits big enough to power that thing. Sing out if you run into trouble. Go.” Two dozen men and women scampered off without a second thought. “Mansel. You and yours hold here with me. The rest, fan out and grab whatever ammo you can find. Return in five minutes.” Sixty soldiers ran down the hallways in groups of sevens and eights to find whatever they could, coming back within the allotted time. One ran into a pack of xenos and used up what ammo they had, returning empty handed. We parceled out everything the best we could. I kept as many railgun coils as I could carry and handed the rest to Robbie, who had the other functioning railgun. The rest were armed with upgraded SAR29’s and were ready for blood.
Pyotr called in saying they had found a power cable that looked promising - it was certainly big enough and had warnings in six languages. Eugen hadn’t reported in and wasn’t responding to coms. I was hoping it was just because their radio was broken or the signal was blocked, but we all knew in our guts they were gone. More names to add to the list of brave men and women I had sent off to die.
I ordered Pytor to cut the cable, which should shut down the gateway and prevent the aliens from bringing in any more reinforcements. As soon as that happened we were going to storm the room and kill every last stinking xeno. No survivors, and no Geneva convention to tell us different.
It sorta kinda worked.
“Whatcha drinking, Colonel?” Robbie asked me, as if everything was normal and it was just another day in the neighborhood. The rest of the bar hooted and hollered, someone sinking a clever shot on the pool table.
“Whiskey. Get’cher own,” I growled back, taking a drink and pretending to ignore his presence. I was in no mood to share, particularly not with him. “And I’m retired.”
The last time I had seen Robbie he was missing a hand along with a chunk of his face. The surgeons had done a good job on patching him back together. Hell, they had done a good job on everyone that made it out, myself included. They had to - if they showed the world what it really took to beat back an alien invasion, recruitment numbers would plummet to near zero. So broken bones were set, mangled limbs and organs were repaired or replaced, plastic surgery was scheduled. The scars were erased, but for some of us, they went too deep for any amount of medical care to fix. On the surface we looked and acted human, but inside some of us were more plastic and ceramic and high-tech gear than flesh and bone. But we looked good on TV, which is what really mattered.
Robbie signaled for a beer, which the bartender obliged. “Put it on his tab,” he said, jerking a thumb at me. “He doesn’t mind.”
“What do you want, Robbie?” I asked, waving a hand at the bartender to say it was okay. “Not like we parted friends last time I checked.” Words were exchanged, most of them heated. We didn’t come to blows, but damn near could’ve.
“Things change. You were angry, blaming yourself for everything that happened.” Pointing at the line of empty bottles, he added, “looks like you still do.” I grunted in agreement and continued to drink. Robbie wouldn’t shut up and kept at it. “Still doing that thing where you go over the names of everyone that didn’t make it out?” I turned my head slowly towards Robbie, fixing him with a hostile stare. It was his turn to ignore me and he blathered on. “What’s the count again? Oh yes, nineteen thousand. I hear they are going to make a documentary. Want to be in it? They can use a sad sack of shit. Be right up your alley.” He shut up and took a drink from his beer, not realizing the amount of control it took not to punch his smug face in.
I thought he was done talking but he started right back up again. “Believe it or not, I have been and always will be your friend. Maybe you forgot that, but I never did. Which is why when you walked away I didn’t, even if I wanted to. Someone had to stick around and pick up the slack. So while you’ve been drinking more than humanly possible and blaming yourself, I - we’ve - have been figuring out what happened.”
“I know what happened. We went in and got blown to hell,” I answered, lifting my glass. “Most of a division wiped out on my orders. But we got the job done.”
Robbie hit me with a sucker punch. “Who said the job was done?”
Pytor’s team took down the power cable as ordered and we came in guns blazing. The gateway was going crazy from all of the ordinance flying around and its power supply being interrupted, but it wasn’t shutting down. Either there was a secondary conduit somewhere or a backup generator providing juice. I had a momentary worry that whatever ritual the Walkers had been doing was keeping it open, but they wasted no time in jumping into the fray, dispelling that notion.
Our first order of business was taking the Walkers out - without them providing guidance, the rest of the xeno swarm should be easy. Great idea, but they weren’t going down without a fight.
Robbie and I fought back-to-back, railguns close to overload as we fired round after round, punching through aliens four at a time. The rest of the remaining company of soldiers burned through ammo like it was going out of style. Someone yelling “grenade!” caused us all to duck, the bang of it going off followed by the whistling sound of shrapnel and someone screaming. Turns out it was me. A chunk of metal made it past my armor and lodged in my gut, tearing things up pretty bad.
“Power souce!” I called out, doing my best to ignore the pain and stay upright. “Find the goddamn power source!”
And incoherent shout drew my attention to Corporal Mahmud Paz, who was pointing at a unit mounted on the far side of the bay that was being guarded by three Walkers and a bunch of their pets. That looked like a fine place to have some target practice, and anyone who wasn’t directly engaged with staying alive moved in closer.
Before we got there something came through and started to tear us a new asshole. Robbie and I ganged up on it and turned it into Swiss cheese, but not before it had wiped out twenty men and women we couldn’t afford to lose.
“We’re fucked!” he gasped, the side of his face that wasn’t hamburger pale from blood loss. I was inclined to agree, but wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
“No we’re not,” I said with confidence I didn’t really have, eyes tracing the line of wrist-thick cables going from the generator to the arms of the still-functioning gateway. “There. Hit it there,” I ordered over the command channel, lighting up a junction with the laser targeting system. I followed through by reloading a coil and chunking off rounds, the railgun rapidly warming up in my hands, heading towards a critical overload.
The remaining troops did the same, just as the Walkers realized they were about to be cut off from whatever hell they called home and broke ranks to try and stop us. Robbie’s railgun failed after five more rounds, the final shot warping the barrel and exploding, taking his right hand with it. The rest of us kept firing, spraying and praying we’d finally punch through and hit something important.
Eventually we did.
“Of course I am. Shut the gateway down, killed all the xenos, exfil’d back to base. World saved, all that jazz.” I took a big slug of whiskey and poured some more, skipping the water this time around. “You were there as I recall. Didn’t look as good as you do now.”
“The miracle of modern medicine. So here’s the deal. We managed to salvage the research and rebuild the gateway. Now hold on, lemme finish. Smaller this time, lower power, double isolation chamber, failsafes, the works. Just big enough for some probes to go through without being detected. Guess what we found?”
“Your virginity?”
“Close, but no cigar. Worlds. Hundreds of worlds. And on all of them, dead civilizations, wiped out by the sames bastards that attacked us. Research managed to translate some of what they found and figured out that every time a species build a gateway, these things come through and wipe them out.”
“But not us,” I grunted.
“But not us. And it gets better.” Robbie looked around and leaned over slightly before continuing in a lower voice, like he was imparting some great secret. “We found their home world.”
The Walkers and their remaining pets tore into us just as the power junction let go, causing the gateway to collapse in a soundless explosion of light and fury. The best part was that it sent the aliens reeling, making them easy pickings. By the time our reinforcements arrived we had bandaged our wounded and crawled out of the rubble, seventy three survivors out of a division of almost twenty thousand.
Fresh air never smelled so good.
I fully expected to be court-marshaled for taking such devastating losses and not calling for a retreat. Instead what I got was commendation after commendation, so many they had to create new combos just so I wouldn’t run out of chest area to display them all. I suspected that it was all a put-up job, but couldn’t get anyone to admit it. Everyone kept telling me how great I was and how I had done the impossible against incredible odds. I had so much smoke blown up my ass I thought I would get lung cancer. After a while I couldn’t take it anymore and turned in my paperwork and resigned, leaving the uniform and the job behind - the only thing I had known for most of my adult life.
I never did buy that boat.
“Explain,” I ordered, giving Robbie my best Don’t Fuck With Me glare. He pretended it didn’t work on him but answered anyways.
“Just like I said. We found the planet they come from. Easy, too. If you don’t know enough to plan ahead the gateway naturally lands there, like a default setting. Then our buddies swarm through, kill everyone, and leave. Lather, rinse, repeat. Break the laws of physics, get eaten.”
“Well that sucks,” I observed, taking a pull from my glass. “But you never answered my question, Robbie. What do you want?”
“We - I - want you. We’re building a bigger gate, one that can send a division or three through. We want to take the fight to them, wipe them out for good before they can do the same to another species. Give the rest of the universe a chance to get off their own rocks and make something of themselves.” Robbie cleared his throat before continuing, “but we need a leader. One that can make the hard choices even if it tears him up inside. One that keeps going and going, putting his ass on the line every single day and inspiring others to do the same. One who knows how to fight these things and win. No matter what it takes. No matter what it costs him personally.”
Robbie put his hand on the top of my glass, and forced it back down to the counter top. “How about it, Colonel? Wanna get some payback? Maybe make those names of yours mean something other than an excuse to wallow in your self-pity?” I didn’t say anything and stared at the reflection of the man in the mirror. “Don’t do it for me. Hell, don’t do it for yourself. Do it for them. For the nineteen thousand. Make their deaths be more than just names on a wall somewhere or a glass in your hand. Don’t walk away this time and hide in a bottle,” he pleaded, hand still covering mine and holding the glass of liquid memory eraser on the countertop.
As I watched, my reflection shifted for a moment, showing me the man I used to be. A man deeply ashamed at what he had become - a drunk, a loser. A man that thought there might be something still inside worth saving, who had never really given up on either of us or what we had once believed in. A man who wanted a second chance to make up for his mistakes.
“Weapons?” I asked, my voice quiet and lost in the background noise of the bar. I had hoped Robbie didn’t hear, but they must have fixed his ears, too.
“New SAR31’s. Better fire control, larger magazines, bigger punch. Railguns have been improved, too. No more losing fingers,” he said, waving his replacement hand around, the synthflesh blending seamlessly into his wrist. “Got some prototype plasma casters that look promising, if you want’em.”
“Armor?” louder this time. No use pretending any more.
“Dragonskin v8. Interlocking plates. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Carry weight has been dropped by half, more flexible. Think chainmail that’ll stop a rocket.”
I stared at the mirror. “Resupply? Air support?”
“Done and done. Trust me, I was your XO for six years before you walked away. I know what you’re going to ask before you ask it. We’re locked, cocked, and ready to roll. Only thing missing is you. The key part to the whole shebang.”
I drummed my fingers on the countertop, trying to think of something to trip him up, and give me an excuse to say no. The bottles called out to me, and I really wanted to get back to my drinking. I finally played my ace card and said, “fine, but I want Kitty,” referring to the best damn sniper I had ever had the pleasure to work with. The last time I spoke to her she was happily retired and living on a beach, having traded in her scope for an endless supply of cabana boys and surfers. She was out for good, no way in hell Robbie had managed to lure her back in.
Robbie threw back his head and laughed, attracting the attention of the entire bar and proving me wrong. “Deal! She’s tanned, toned, and ready to kick ass. Even brought some promising new recruits with her. So what do you say Colonel, ready to get back to work? Maybe bring some peace to the universe, make a real difference again?”
The names were a silent presence, floating around in the back of my mind. I realized in that moment of pure absolute clarity that I had been wrong, so very wrong. The names of the men and women that had followed me to hell and stayed there were not a burden or a curse but a blessing. They had not been dragging me down or holding me back - I had. They were there to lift me up, keep me going, push me forwards. Knowing each one of them had been an honor, and I would never forget their sacrifice.
I shoved Robbie’s hand off the glass and tossed it back before standing up and giving the mirror the evil eye. My reflection looked back at me, pleased for the first time in ages. I made a silent vow to carry the memories of those men and women to the farthest reaches of the universe and make their deaths count by tearing the xeno homeworld down, brick by bloody brick, until the galaxy was free from the threat they posed. I could feel the names, all nineteen thousand of them, milling around, tired of excuses and eager to get on with it.
Nineteen thousand. Plus one more.

Watching a video from a blockchain conference in Switzerland, I got a fair bit of info from the CEO, Richard. I’ll be quoting him in that video a few times in this post, and here’s the first: “In my industry, we talk about how many shipments go wrong - and the average is 8.5%. So for 8.5% of pharma shipments for example, the [proper] temperature is not maintained. In our case [with Smart Containers], it’s less than 0.1%. That’s 75 times better. Richard also speaks in this video about how they will be able to eliminate the amount of shipments happening every year, due to the decentralized nature of this whole system, there will be less need to send packages to places far from their end destination, to make the delivery easier on the shipping side. We’ve all had packages come from across the ocean, only for it to fly 1500 Km past us to be shipped back our way next week…

There will be more than one blockchain at play with this system as well. The info that people deserve to know will be available on a public blockchain like Ethereum, the weight, material safety data sheets, the storage conditions (which as said up above, 8.5% of pharma shipments have issues with, and Smart Containers brings that down to below 0.1%), as well as at the same time, the info that shouldn’t be public to everyone (Bills, invoices, etc) would be stored on a blockchain like Fabric or HyperLedger. LOGI will be the fuel for the LOGI Chain.

The LOGI project finds good echoes with logistics players but even more with blockchain infrastructures like NEM, EOS and NEO.
Emirates for once was enthusiastic about the project and definitely wants to join the foundation. As you know, the government of Dubai is focussing on applying blockchain asap to multiple industries.
We are also in exchange with ShipChain, who are running a similar project in the US. Our goal is to collaborate with a maximum of projects around the world.
The LOGI Chain Foundation will be set up in July, right at the end of the ICO. Dr. Fabian Schär, our valued Advisor, will be in charge of defining how the LOGI Chain Foundation will develop in the next 2-3 years. Tokens

Min. investment = $500 USD for ICO, $5000 for presale (largest portion of supply), $250k for private sale.
There are two tokens as mentioned before: SMARC and LOGI. I’m more into SMARC because it’s safe (safe once the payouts start of course, as soon as a coin has a clear value like this, BTC moving up or down doesn’t matter to you), as well as obviously very attractive if you think of the long term profits.
 
Every year, the company’s annual shareholder meeting takes place, during which the shareholders will agree (or negotiate) on a proposal by the Smart Containers’ board about how much of the company profits is to be paid to the shareholders that year. 20% of that amount is taken, converted to ETH, and fairly distributed to the token holders.

What specific rights come with my investment? The SMARC token is a profit share token. When the company generates profits and the company’s general assembly approves a dividend payout, 20% of the defined funds attributed to dividends will be distributed proportionally to holders of SMARC tokens in circulation. In contrast, the LOGI token is a utility token that can be used to pay for transactions on the LOGI CHAIN, an open-source logistics platform for all stakeholders in the logistics field with the goal to create a seamless, fully integrated, digital logistics process.
 
Smart Containers will pay out a dividend to SMARC token holders. This would imply that the SMARC token is a security token. Are you compliant with financial regulation? Smart Containers tokens is not classified as a security in Switzerland under current law. This may be different in other jurisdictions such as the USA. Hence the SMARC token is not eligible for sale in certain jurisdictions. Our benchmark is the Modum token sale from June 2017. We have elected to use the same legal structure as it was accepted by regulators in Switzerland and well received by the ICO community and exchanges.
 
What is the vesting schedule for team and advisors tokens? Everyone will receive SMARC and LOGI tokens at the same time. Minting will occur at the end of the token sale. Advisors will have lock up periods depending on how many tokens they receive. Team members have a lock up period of 12 months.
 
Are SkyCell containers an approved ULD according to IATA regulations? SkyCell containers are exempt from the ULD rules by IATA. This has the huge advantage that, compared to our competitors, the SkyCell container can not only fly but can also leave the airport. Skycell containers are therefore a door-to-door solution. Our competitors’ containers, on the other hand, have to be unloaded at the airport and packed into a new transport unit in order to continue their journey from the airport to the final destination, increasing the risk of temperature excursion, and loss.
 
Are there financial statements? If so, are they audited, and by whom? Yes, there are financial statements for all our companies. They are audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). To preserve our competitive advantage in the market, we have decided not to publish our financial figures online at this moment in time.
 
Are Modum and Smart Containers competitors? Modum and Smart Containers are not competitors, more future partners. Modum rents/sells sensors to track and trace shipments on temperature, whereas Smart Containers rents/sells the containers, in which products including sensors are put inside. Of course our containers have sensors that record data for quality control, but Smart Containers does not sell these data sets. In the end Modum and Smart Containers will address to the same clients - Smart Containers provides the container and Modum will put a sensor in it.
 
How many airlines fly SkyCell containers? In addition to our major partners, Emirates and CargoLux, more than 30 airlines fly SkyCell containers.
 
What destinations does SkyCell serve? SkyCell is a global company. We are shipping containers around the world and reach each pharma client within 24-48 hours. This is accomplished through our airline partners, that can fly ready-to-use containers to more than 150 airports.
 

Profit Sharing Mechanism

During the annual shareholder meeting, the shareholders in the form of the general assembly (Annual General Assembly) decide on a proposal by Smart Containers’ board regarding the usage of profit as recognized in the annual financial statements of Smart Containers in the form of distribution of dividends. Distribution of a dividend on shares shall be announced in the “Tokenholder Information” section of the Smart Containers website; such announcement shall include the date and time of the dividend payment and the dividend amount per ordinary share in USD as well as the ETH/USD exchange rate which shall become applicable, as derived from publicly available and reliable quotes. Within 20 business days of the date of the resolution passed by the Annual General Assembly regarding dividend payments to the shareholders of Smart Containers, Smart Containers will make available a Profit Share Amount to each authenticated Tokenholder equal to 20% (twenty percent) of all dividends agreed to being distributed per share to the shareholders, divided by the total number of issued SMARC Tokens (To further explain for clarity, all Tokenholders combined will receive an amount equal to 20% of the amount received by all shareholders combined.). SMARC Tokenholders shall receive these payments in ETH, at an average exchange rate specified by Smart Containers.

SkyCell is looking to bring a business-to-consumer solution to market, that was developed and tested with one of the top 20 pharma companies in the world. The direct to patient market is estimated to increase to a 2.5 billion USD market in the future, with no other competition yet aside from styrofoam containers that are disposed of after one use. The SkyCell ONE can also be co-branded by a partner, such as a pharmacy chain that could rent it out for home delivery, business trips or even holidays.
The product is temperature stable for up to 72 hours, can be recharged passively in a fridge, or temp-controlled warehouse or truck. Currently it’s best in class for size and weight, but that’s probably down to there being no competition! We are launching also additional sizes – so we are launching a very small box to ship pharma directly to patients' homes. Amazon just recently announced that they will postpone entering the pharma distribution space, as they do not have the technology to ship to patients homes in a temperature controlled manner. We are bringing this to market later this year. This will increase the convenience of patients and reduce the costs in the healthcare system.
 

Organs

I just finished listening to this podcast (20 minutes long, but you can skip the intro stuff to make it shorter of course). I’m now twice as excited as I was before. I’m going to type out a large chunk of the podcast. I’ll be paraphrasing slightly, so I don’t have to type every “uhh” or anything, plus he sometimes starts one sentence before finishing another.
“We have some prototypes, that we built, for example, for the Children’s Hospital here in Zurich, where we’ve designed a container that can transport living skin.” [Interviewer; “Wow.”] “So for young children that suffer skin diseases that could be almost fatal, like cancer, they grow this… patch of skin, and then that skin needs to be transported, and kept at body temperature so… roughly 37 degrees Celsius. There we designed them a box that did this for 10 days, autonomously.” [“That’s amazing…”] “Yeah, we did this because we wanted to learn how to interact and work with hospitals, this is a highly specialized application, and the next step could be organ logistics, because most of the organs today are transported on ice, because that’s the standard set in the 70’s, but studies have shown that if your transport certain tissue at room temperature, it is significantly better for the tissue than if you transport it on ice.”
I can guarantee you every major hospital on earth is going to want their hands on this container that can allow them to transport both living skin, and potentially organs in the future. The fact that in this day and age we’re still throwing people’s kidneys/lungs/etc in a bucket of ice is a little weird.
From the recent AMA:
Our Container BT5: The name stands for Body Temperature 5 L content. It transports skin grafts that was cultured for children with burn accidends. The temperature range is 37°c. Nico (our CTO) was so taken by this project, that he developped this container only for this purpose for a company calles Cutiss (a start-up from Zurich). We currently only have around 10 of these containers in use. It is not produced in on a large scale. We could market it, but have bigger opportunities to tackle first with the SkyCell one. You can only focus on 1-2 projects at a time. The BT5 is a beautiful project, but will need manpower to scale production and then manpower to market it.
 

Competition

Envirotainer, The leading company in this field, has only a matter of time before they’re overtaken. SmartContainer Group’s containers are proven to be superior (5x as efficient, 35% lighter, self-charging, etc, etc, read up above for the whole deal). According to the Googles, Envirotainer’s best year (2015) saw a profit of $50,000,000. It’s logical to assume that Smartcontainers will surpass them as the top dog, and at the same time be pulling in much more profit over time by serving both pharma, and the food industry (Envirotainer only does pharma). By accepting cryptocurrency payments, saving them a fair bit in fees from cross border payments, they’ll also net a small % more in profits annually.
I asked about the state of their competition. Turns out, Envirotainer (or more specifically the private equity firm that owns them) offered SmartContainers a buy out of $125m. This was one of countless offers they've turned down, because they believe they can scale the company to much further value. The firm selling Envirotainer has been trying to find a buying for the past 3 years, at $1b. No one will buy them, because anyone who knows their shit in that industry knows SmartContainers will overtake them in no time.
From April's AMA:
Our 2 biggest competitors are for sale. Envirotainer (biggest player) is owned by a Private Equity company that wants to sell it for 1 b USD. it already tries to sell for 3 years. SkyCell is considered a threat to the valuation of Envirotainer, since we are winning one client after the other from them. While Envirotainer is the largest player with a huge sales force and well established client contacts, they are still operating on an "old" technology. SkyCell is technology leader, has lighter containers, reduces CO2 emissions and is considered to be the future.
2 days ago, a private equity company requested a meeting to see the valuation of SkyCell and evaluate to buy. We have already been approached several times. We are treated as the bride in the market. However, Richard and Nico think we can scale the business much more before we should consider to sell. We are just getting started.
We have won 3 large accounts in Q1. Today we have 1200 containers. By the end of the year, it will be 2000. Our business plan estimates that SkyCell will be profitable in 2019. Therefore you can expect first dividends in Q1 2020.
 

Official Projections

Another redditor asked for "optimistic expectations for potential profits" during their ama, here was their answer:
How does a profit of 21 m USD on Smart Containers total in 2020 sound? This figure will then quadruple in 2021 to 76 m USD.
As you can see, this would mean that by 2021 tokenholders would not even have broken even yet. I myself am fine with this, i'm expecting to hold SMARC until the end (be it I die or the company sells, in which case i'll enjoy that fat exit payout). The potential gains from 2020-2030 are far more worth it to me than trying to make it in one year with heavy risk.
So why invest in this over a random shitcoin that might moon? If you're here to turn $1000 into $1m and get out by the end of the year, good luck, don't invest in smarc. If you're realistic and are aware that crypto will only be so volatile for so long, go ahead and think about putting a bit of your portfolio in something that will have actual value, lasting long after the shitcoins die. Crypto market could crash at any time, but that doesn't mean that SmartContainers as a company goes anywhere, nor their profits. I don't think I need to explain any further.

So…

A 5 year old company, with over 100,000 collective hours of R&D put into their products, with currently just under 100 innovative patents, that is already the 4th largest of it’s kind in the world, with the top product in their field on earth, is doing an ICO that is fully backed by the Swiss government, with a token that is due 20% of all future shareholder payouts, as well as 20% of any potential exit profits (the company being purchased). They’re already this big, and you can benefit from both their success, and their expansion into new markets.
There’s nothing stopping SmartContainers Group/SkyCell/FoodGuardians from working with VeChain in the future either. Or Walton, or Wabi, Devery, OriginTrail, Ambrosus, all of em.

Typically in the market there are Currency and Utility coins. I asked about this tech during their AMA, here's what they said:
Cooling technology: Yes, our containers are state of the art. Nico has developed a cooling material that freezes at 5.5°C. So if you put it in a cooling chamber that has a lower temperature, it automatically freezes and if the temperature is higher it melts. Basically, the system works like a huge ice cube that is empty in the middle. The centre of the ice cube has a steady temperature of 0° until at least 1 side of the ice cube has melted. It's the same principle for SkyCell containers, but at 5.5°C
 
The patented-in house developed cooling technology stores five times more energy than traditional methods to keep the container at a consistent temperature. Watching a video from a blockchain conference in Switzerland, I got a fair bit of info from the CEO, Richard. I’ll be quoting him in that video a few times in this post, and here’s the first: “In my industry, we talk about how many shipments go wrong - and the average is 8.5%. So for 8.5% of pharma shipments for example, the [proper] temperature is not maintained. In our case [with Smart Containers], it’s less than 0.1%. That’s 75 times better. Richard also speaks in this video about how they will be able to eliminate the amount of shipments happening every year, due to the decentralized nature of this whole system, there will be less need to send packages to places far from their end destination, to make the delivery easier on the shipping side. We’ve all had packages come from across the ocean, only for it to fly 1500 Km past us to be shipped back our way next week…

Logistics is an old industry. it started out on paper, moved through the fax, early ages of the information era, early email, current email, and is now ready to move onto the blockchain.
LOGI CHAIN GOALS

There will be more than one blockchain at play with this system as well. The info that people deserve to know will be available on a public blockchain like Ethereum, the weight, material safety data sheets, the storage conditions (which as said up above, 8.5% of pharma shipments have issues with, and Smart Containers brings that down to below 0.1%), as well as at the same time, the info that shouldn’t be public to everyone (Bills, invoices, etc) would be stored on a blockchain like Fabric or HyperLedger. LOGI will be the fuel for the LOGI Chain.

The LOGI project finds good echoes with logistics players but even more with blockchain infrastructures like NEM, EOS and NEO.
Emirates for once was enthusiastic about the project and definitely wants to join the foundation. As you know, the government of Dubai is focussing on applying blockchain asap to multiple industries.
We are also in exchange with ShipChain, who are running a similar project in the US. Our goal is to collaborate with a maximum of projects around the world.
The LOGI Chain Foundation will be set up in July, right at the end of the ICO. Dr. Fabian Schär, our valued Advisor, will be in charge of defining how the LOGI Chain Foundation will develop in the next 2-3 years. Nico Ros, Chief Technology Officer & Co-Founder Nico is the mastermind behind Smart Containers Group and its technology. Growing up in Basel, Switzerland, he discovered his passion for mathematics very early on and therefore came to study mathematics, physics and engineering. Being a natural talent, he had already won prestigious architectural prizes during his studies and quickly became managing partner at ZPF an engineering company in Basel. He has constructed the most expensive buildings in Switzerland in collaboration with the famous architects Herzog & DeMeuron. Nico’s key strength lies not only in his state of the art engineering know how but also in his efficient management of teams, leading highly complex, multimillion projects to success. Andreas is the true logistic finance expert in the company. He spent all his career in various finance roles of logistic service providers: from Swissair (today Swiss International Airlines), to Swissport (biggest ground service provider for airlines) where he filled the role as regional CFO for the Middle East and Africa. His last role before joining Smart Containers Group was CFO of Unitpool (now called Unilode), which is the largest independent air-freight container pooling company in the world.
 
Thomas Taroni - Head of IT - LinkedIn
Thomas is an IT-architecture mastermind. His first claim to fame is the creation of the largest media database, shared by all media houses in Switzerland: more than two million articles are uploaded every year, then queried and shared seamlessly and efficiently among multiple news companies. He founded his own IT company to design IT architectures focusing on process automation (eliminating paper and endless emails), and as a result won other clients (large banks, pharma companies and even publicly tendered government contracts). SkyCell became his client, when they needed a bespoke asset management system to track and trace their containers around the world. He joined SkyCell four years ago and since his tenure, has become the head of IT for all companies of Smart Containers Group.

Tokens

Min. investment = $500 USD for ICO, $5000 for presale (largest portion of supply), $250k for private sale.
There are two tokens as mentioned before: SMARC and LOGI. I’m more into SMARC because it’s safe (safe once the payouts start of course, as soon as a coin has a clear value like this, BTC moving up or down doesn’t matter to you), as well as obviously very attractive if you think of the long term profits.
 
Every year, the company’s annual shareholder meeting takes place, during which the shareholders will agree (or negotiate) on a proposal by the Smart Containers’ board about how much of the company profits is to be paid to the shareholders that year. 20% of that amount is taken, converted to ETH, and fairly distributed to the token holders.
Since the cofounders and all token holders will have aligned interests and incentives, we are all in a positive-sum-game. We do not want to use the ICO as a speculative springboard, but as way of funding innovation and change the world. What specific rights come with my investment? The SMARC token is a profit share token. When the company generates profits and the company’s general assembly approves a dividend payout, 20% of the defined funds attributed to dividends will be distributed proportionally to holders of SMARC tokens in circulation. In contrast, the LOGI token is a utility token that can be used to pay for transactions on the LOGI CHAIN, an open-source logistics platform for all stakeholders in the logistics field with the goal to create a seamless, fully integrated, digital logistics process.
 
Smart Containers will pay out a dividend to SMARC token holders. This would imply that the SMARC token is a security token. Are you compliant with financial regulation? Smart Containers tokens is not classified as a security in Switzerland under current law. This may be different in other jurisdictions such as the USA. Hence the SMARC token is not eligible for sale in certain jurisdictions. Our benchmark is the Modum token sale from June 2017. We have elected to use the same legal structure as it was accepted by regulators in Switzerland and well received by the ICO community and exchanges.
 
What is the vesting schedule for team and advisors tokens? Everyone will receive SMARC and LOGI tokens at the same time. Minting will occur at the end of the token sale. Advisors will have lock up periods depending on how many tokens they receive. Team members have a lock up period of 12 months.
 
Are SkyCell containers an approved ULD according to IATA regulations? SkyCell containers are exempt from the ULD rules by IATA. This has the huge advantage that, compared to our competitors, the SkyCell container can not only fly but can also leave the airport. Skycell containers are therefore a door-to-door solution. Our competitors’ containers, on the other hand, have to be unloaded at the airport and packed into a new transport unit in order to continue their journey from the airport to the final destination, increasing the risk of temperature excursion, and loss.
 
Are there financial statements? If so, are they audited, and by whom? Yes, there are financial statements for all our companies. They are audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). To preserve our competitive advantage in the market, we have decided not to publish our financial figures online at this moment in time.
 
Are Modum and Smart Containers competitors? Modum and Smart Containers are not competitors, more future partners. Modum rents/sells sensors to track and trace shipments on temperature, whereas Smart Containers rents/sells the containers, in which products including sensors are put inside. Of course our containers have sensors that record data for quality control, but Smart Containers does not sell these data sets. In the end Modum and Smart Containers will address to the same clients - Smart Containers provides the container and Modum will put a sensor in it.
 
How many airlines fly SkyCell containers? In addition to our major partners, Emirates and CargoLux, more than 30 airlines fly SkyCell containers.
 
What destinations does SkyCell serve? SkyCell is a global company. We are shipping containers around the world and reach each pharma client within 24-48 hours. This is accomplished through our airline partners, that can fly ready-to-use containers to more than 150 airports.
 

Profit Sharing Mechanism

During the annual shareholder meeting, the shareholders in the form of the general assembly (Annual General Assembly) decide on a proposal by Smart Containers’ board regarding the usage of profit as recognized in the annual financial statements of Smart Containers in the form of distribution of dividends. Distribution of a dividend on shares shall be announced in the “Tokenholder Information” section of the Smart Containers website; such announcement shall include the date and time of the dividend payment and the dividend amount per ordinary share in USD as well as the ETH/USD exchange rate which shall become applicable, as derived from publicly available and reliable quotes. Within 20 business days of the date of the resolution passed by the Annual General Assembly regarding dividend payments to the shareholders of Smart Containers, Smart Containers will make available a Profit Share Amount to each authenticated Tokenholder equal to 20% (twenty percent) of all dividends agreed to being distributed per share to the shareholders, divided by the total number of issued SMARC Tokens (To further explain for clarity, all Tokenholders combined will receive an amount equal to 20% of the amount received by all shareholders combined.). SMARC Tokenholders shall receive these payments in ETH, at an average exchange rate specified by Smart Containers.

This is referring to the fact that not only can FoodGuardian and SkyCell containers save cost, CO2, and man/brainpower, but they can also make shipments faster when combined with the blockchain (LOGI Chain) and Smart Contracts. when everything is accounted for at every second with almost as little room for human error as possible, things are far more efficient.
We are launching our first food application – we will announce a collaboration before June for a solution that can be used to ship overnight online fresh food to people homes and can be used to supply hospitals and restaurants as well.

SkyCell is looking to bring a business-to-consumer solution to market, that was developed and tested with one of the top 20 pharma companies in the world. The direct to patient market is estimated to increase to a 2.5 billion USD market in the future, with no other competition yet aside from styrofoam containers that are disposed of after one use. The SkyCell ONE can also be co-branded by a partner, such as a pharmacy chain that could rent it out for home delivery, business trips or even holidays.
The product is temperature stable for up to 72 hours, can be recharged passively in a fridge, or temp-controlled warehouse or truck. Currently it’s best in class for size and weight, but that’s probably down to there being no competition! We are launching also additional sizes – so we are launching a very small box to ship pharma directly to patients' homes. Amazon just recently announced that they will postpone entering the pharma distribution space, as they do not have the technology to ship to patients homes in a temperature controlled manner. We are bringing this to market later this year. This will increase the convenience of patients and reduce the costs in the healthcare system.
 

Organs

I just finished listening to this podcast (20 minutes long, but you can skip the intro stuff to make it shorter of course). I’m now twice as excited as I was before. I’m going to type out a large chunk of the podcast. I’ll be paraphrasing slightly, so I don’t have to type every “uhh” or anything, plus he sometimes starts one sentence before finishing another.
“We have some prototypes, that we built, for example, for the Children’s Hospital here in Zurich, where we’ve designed a container that can transport living skin.” [Interviewer; “Wow.”] “So for young children that suffer skin diseases that could be almost fatal, like cancer, they grow this… patch of skin, and then that skin needs to be transported, and kept at body temperature so… roughly 37 degrees Celsius. There we designed them a box that did this for 10 days, autonomously.” [“That’s amazing…”] “Yeah, we did this because we wanted to learn how to interact and work with hospitals, this is a highly specialized application, and the next step could be organ logistics, because most of the organs today are transported on ice, because that’s the standard set in the 70’s, but studies have shown that if your transport certain tissue at room temperature, it is significantly better for the tissue than if you transport it on ice.”
I can guarantee you every major hospital on earth is going to want their hands on this container that can allow them to transport both living skin, and potentially organs in the future. The fact that in this day and age we’re still throwing people’s kidneys/lungs/etc in a bucket of ice is a little weird.
From the recent AMA:
Our Container BT5: The name stands for Body Temperature 5 L content. It transports skin grafts that was cultured for children with burn accidends. The temperature range is 37°c. Nico (our CTO) was so taken by this project, that he developped this container only for this purpose for a company calles Cutiss (a start-up from Zurich). We currently only have around 10 of these containers in use. It is not produced in on a large scale. We could market it, but have bigger opportunities to tackle first with the SkyCell one. You can only focus on 1-2 projects at a time. The BT5 is a beautiful project, but will need manpower to scale production and then manpower to market it.
 

Competition

Envirotainer, The leading company in this field, has only a matter of time before they’re overtaken. SmartContainer Group’s containers are proven to be superior (5x as efficient, 35% lighter, self-charging, etc, etc, read up above for the whole deal). According to the Googles, Envirotainer’s best year (2015) saw a profit of $50,000,000. It’s logical to assume that Smartcontainers will surpass them as the top dog, and at the same time be pulling in much more profit over time by serving both pharma, and the food industry (Envirotainer only does pharma). By accepting cryptocurrency payments, saving them a fair bit in fees from cross border payments, they’ll also net a small % more in profits annually.
I asked about the state of their competition. Turns out, Envirotainer (or more specifically the private equity firm that owns them) offered SmartContainers a buy out of $125m. This was one of countless offers they've turned down, because they believe they can scale the company to much further value. The firm selling Envirotainer has been trying to find a buying for the past 3 years, at $1b. No one will buy them, because anyone who knows their shit in that industry knows SmartContainers will overtake them in no time.
From April's AMA:
Our 2 biggest competitors are for sale. Envirotainer (biggest player) is owned by a Private Equity company that wants to sell it for 1 b USD. it already tries to sell for 3 years. SkyCell is considered a threat to the valuation of Envirotainer, since we are winning one client after the other from them. While Envirotainer is the largest player with a huge sales force and well established client contacts, they are still operating on an "old" technology. SkyCell is technology leader, has lighter containers, reduces CO2 emissions and is considered to be the future.
2 days ago, a private equity company requested a meeting to see the valuation of SkyCell and evaluate to buy. We have already been approached several times. We are treated as the bride in the market. However, Richard and Nico think we can scale the business much more before we should consider to sell. We are just getting started.
We have won 3 large accounts in Q1. Today we have 1200 containers. By the end of the year, it will be 2000. Our business plan estimates that SkyCell will be profitable in 2019. Therefore you can expect first dividends in Q1 2020.
 

Official Projections

Another redditor asked for "optimistic expectations for potential profits" during their ama, here was their answer:
How does a profit of 21 m USD on Smart Containers total in 2020 sound? This figure will then quadruple in 2021 to 76 m USD.
As you can see, this would mean that by 2021 tokenholders would not even have broken even yet. I myself am fine with this, i'm expecting to hold SMARC until the end (be it I die or the company sells, in which case i'll enjoy that fat exit payout). The potential gains from 2020-2030 are far more worth it to me than trying to make it in one year with heavy risk.
So why invest in this over a random shitcoin that might moon? If you're here to turn $1000 into $1m and get out by the end of the year, good luck, don't invest in smarc. If you're realistic and are aware that crypto will only be so volatile for so long, go ahead and think about putting a bit of your portfolio in something that will have actual value, lasting long after the shitcoins die. Crypto market could crash at any time, but that doesn't mean that SmartContainers as a company goes anywhere, nor their profits. I don't think I need to explain any further.

So…

A 5 year old company, with over 100,000 collective hours of R&D put into their products, with currently just under 100 innovative patents, that is already the 4th largest of it’s kind in the world, with the top product in their field on earth, is doing an ICO that is fully backed by the Swiss government, with a token that is due 20% of all future shareholder payouts, as well as 20% of any potential exit profits (the company being purchased). They’re already this big, and you can benefit from both their success, and their expansion into new markets.
There’s nothing stopping SmartContainers Group/SkyCell/FoodGuardians from working with VeChain in the future either. Or Walton, or Wabi, Devery, OriginTrail, Ambrosus, all of em.

Should you invest in this? I sure am, and am very glad to even be offered the opportunity, but it’s up to you. Read through this post if you haven't yet, then click these links and decide for yourself. Don't go all in of course, since this is a profit share token, there is much less risk, therefore less short term reward. The long term reward is what we're looking at here, don't buy into the ICO and then complain that you aren't getting 1000% ROI payouts by year one.
