Bitcoin/AltCoin mining from an idle render farm

Hello, miners!
I manage a render farm for a VFX studio. We're going to be going into a bit of a slow time with a lack of a production to significantly use our current farm resources in about 2 months and will potentially last until the fall. I've been tasked to investigate ways for us to utilize (or not utilize) our farm power and present the ways to our CTO. One such option I'm going to be researching is to turn our farm into a dynamic digital currency miner, either standalone or part of a pool.
While I realize in my short time researching, that ASIC devices outclass CPU an GPU for BTC mining, I'm wondering if btc/altcoin mining is still a somewhat viable option. During this period, the make up of our farm will be roughly 500 dual Ivy Bridge hexacore xeon blades (24 logical cores with HT) with 48GB of RAM a piece (30 of which have Tesla GPUs for playblasting/houdini sims). Does anyone have any good reference calculators so that I can input our overhead for power and cooling? Does anyone have any references or contacts of other studios that have tried to turn to mining? Basically, any information you can throw at me or point me in the right direction with minimal effort will help my research effort greatly.

ETH 2.0 Research/Governance/Roadmap at a glance

If history is any guide, we’re not going to see ETH 2.0 until 2022 at the earliest, even if the earliest phases of “Serenity” begin getting pushed in mid-2020. ETH 2.0’s rollout breaks down into seven (7!!!) phases and brings with it the promise of staking, sharding, a new virtual machine, and more dancing badgers.
(One of our analysts, Wilson Withiam, put together an excellent overview of both the ETH 2.0 and ETH 1.x roadmaps for this report. They are critical to track and understand at a high-level given how much Ethereum’s performance will affect other competitive projects and most of the DeFi and Web 3 infrastructure. So these next two sections are longer and more technical.)
Here’s what you need to know about the current game plan for crypto’s largest platform.
Phase 0 marks the launch of the “beacon chain”, which will serve as the backbone for a new blockchain. The beacon chain will manage network validators (large early stakers like ConsenSys) and ultimately assign validators to individual shards (slicing the new blockchain into smaller chunks is a key, difficult, controversial scaling decision that’s been made). The new chain will support Ethereum’s new proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, and offer inflation rewards with new ETH2 for those that pony up and lock 32 ETH1 tokens into an irreversible contract. That one way bridge into the new system is also contentious, but it means ETH1 supply will start getting “effectively burned” once token holder begin claiming beacon chain validator slots. Initial reports claimed Jan. 3 as a realistic launch date (lol). It will be amazing to see this launched by end of June.
Phase 1 will introduce 64 individual shard chains (reduced from 1,024!!!) to the network, with the option to increase the total down the road as the design gets tested. The Ethereum elite see sharding as the “key to future scalability” as shards can parallelize transaction processing, something that could improve network performance and reduce individual validator’s costs (good for decentralization). It comes with big risk: this is still theoretical. No network the size of Ethereum has successfully sharded its blockchain. In Phase 1, shard chains will only contain simple data sets (no smart contracts or transaction executions) to test the system’s structure. As with Phase 0, the beacon chain will continue to run in parallel with ETH 1.x throughout the phase. Don’t expect Phase 1 anytime before 2021.
Phase 2 marks the full launch of the ETH2 chain, allowing for on-chain contract execution and introducing the new eWASM virtual machine (dubbed EVM 2.0). At this point, existing dApps can start migrating their contracts from ETH 1.x to a specific shard (one shard per contract) in the new network. Storage rent, charging contract owners for storing data on the network (more on this below), is in the cards as well, which would require mass contract rewrites. Even though Phase 2 intends to replace the original Ethereum blockchain entirely, ETH 1.x may still live on as a shard within ETH2. (How confused are you by now? See why bitcoin will still dominate the macro narrative for a while?) A late 2021 release for Phase 2 is optimistic. Before the end of 2022 would be a win.
The final four phases are less defined, and without an attached timeline:
Phase 3 implements state-minimized clients (because stateless clients are just too much). Phase 4 allows for cross-shard transactions. Phase 5 improves network security and the availability of data proofs. Phase 6 introduces meta-shards, as in “shards within shards within shards,” for near-infinite scaling. If you’re scratching your head and are sadistic enough to read more, the Sharding Wiki page does note, “this may be difficult.”
Scaling and compilation efficiencies aside, the most notable change in Ethereum’s metamorphosis is the transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. PoW is the more battle tested security model for blockchain networks, while PoS may prove to be more efficient but with new and less obvious attack vectors. For the more technical, we recommend reading Bison Trails’ Viktor Bunin on the subject of PoS security threats.
Past research has also shown PoS requires an extra layer of “trust” vs. PoW, to help nodes sync to the network. Most models share specific characteristics to address this trust issue, such as allowing for a dynamic set of validators (rotate your security), promoting token holder participation in consensus, and assessing steep penalties (slashing) for any network participant that violates the protocol guidelines. ETH 2.0 will function similarly, but may be able to learn from other PoS networks (and their R&D) as well as those come live and see real world issues. As Vitalik points out, recent research in PoS resulted in “great theoretical progress,” But...

2 ETH 1.x Research/Governance/Roadmap at a glance.

Ok, one more. Bear with us. Let’s reiterate, ETH 2.0 is a brand new blockchain. It’s going to be a chaotic and high-risk transition. In the meantime, the existing network needs to run existing applications (particularly financial settlements for DeFi transactions). More critical upgrades are needed in the current system.
To that end, ETH 1.x devs have three goals to boost performance and reduce blockchain bloat: (1) introduce client optimizations that increase transaction capacity; (2) cap disk space requirements and prune old, memory-sucking data (so running a node is less expensive and more decentralized); and (3) upgrade the EVM to eWASM, a newer open standard for code compilers that simplifies debugging, and is also used by all the newer smart contract platforms. ETH 1.x developers have decided to split the major tasks amongst four working groups:

Core developers intend to introduce most of these implementations through a series of hard forks, the latest of which activated just over a week ago (Istanbul, Dec. 7). However, Istanbul’s second phase, tentatively scheduled for Q2 next year, has Ethereans at each other’s throats. The controversy boils down to the fork’s inclusion of ProgPoW, an ASIC-resistant hashing algorithm designed to replace Ethereum’s current algo. ProgPoW aims to even the playing field for GPU miners and ward off the entrance of potential ASIC competitors. The miners like that. But many miners and investors see ProgPoW as a threat to their investments. For miners, the change would shift the power dynamic away from mining farms and render expensive, specialized mining hardware useless. Ethereum (and ERC-20) investors intent on securing their assets might balk because ASIC miners typically prop up hash rates (overall chain security) and their costs “naturally create a price-floor for ASK prices of miners’ sell-orders.”
This saga is far from over. The infighting will likely continue leading up to ProgPoW’s activation date mid-next year, and presents the strongest potential for a network split since “The DAO” fork that spawned Ethereum Classic. The looming transition to ETH 2.0 (and proof-of-stake) will likely deter investor pushback, because it’s a short-term battle in a war the miners are ultimately going to lose, anyway.
Unless the roadmap changes back to supporting a hybrid PoW/PoS system, of course, but... Oh my god, I’m just kidding. This section is mercifully over.

Monero Deep Dive: The Cryptocurrency To Use If You Want True Anonymity, Far More Anonymous Than Bitcoin

In the early days of cryptocurrency Bitcoin was considered the best payment method for those who wished to stay anonymous. At the time this was true, since Bitcoin required no personal identification information while fiat payment methods like banks and PayPal required a full suite of personal identification information. However, all Bitcoin transactions in history are stored on a publicly accessible block explorer, and with the rise of blockchain forensics it is now possible to figure out who owns a Bitcoin address and what they have been doing with their Bitcoin. Although it is possible to increase Bitcoin’s anonymity by using Tor, VPNs, and CoinJoin, as will be discussed in future Cypherpunk Labs articles, Bitcoin can only be considered pseudo-anonymous rather than fully anonymous.
Nicolas van Saberhagen recognized that Bitcoin lacked full anonymity, in addition to the fact that it is a slow and difficult process to change Bitcoin’s code. Saberhagen proposed to create a new cryptocurrency that was far more anonymous, in addition to correcting some other apparent deficiencies in Bitcoin, and wrote up these ideas in the CryptoNote White Paper.
The first cryptocurrency to utilize the ideas in the CryptoNote White Paper was Bytecoin (BCN), which is a lesser known but still functional stealth cryptocurrency. Bitcointalk user thankful_for_today modified the code from Bytecoin and created BitMonero), but there was community criticism since not everything in the CryptoNote White Paper was adopted. This caused thankful_for_today to apparently abandon the project, but a group of users led by Johny Mnemonic quickly took over and renamed the cryptocurrency Monero (XMR).
One of the most critical pieces of stealth technology that Monero uses is ring signatures. With Bitcoin a transaction is signed with a user’s private key and can be verified with the public key. With a ring signature a transaction is signed by your key as well as the public keys from several other outputs on the blockchain using a triangular distribution method. Essentially, each Monero transaction is signed by a group of keys, and it is not possible to distinguish which key the transaction originated from. This can be thought of as decentralized and trustless mixing, and ultimately ring signatures hide the destination and origin of a transaction.
Eventually Monero upped the ante and implemented ring signature confidential transactions (RingCT), which uses multi-layered linkable spontaneous anonymous group signatures to hide the amount of a transaction. However, RingCT transactions required a large amount of data in order to ensure that the sum of inputs and outputs equaled zero, and bulletproofs were implemented to solve this problem. More about bulletproofs can be read in this paper. Essentially, bulletproofs helped reduce transaction size, lowering transaction fees on the Monero network, and also made it cheaper to create transactions with higher degrees of complexity.
Another critical piece of technology that makes Monero anonymous is stealth addresses. The sender creates a random one-time address for every transaction on behalf of the recipient. This allows a recipient to have just one published address but all of their incoming transactions go to different addresses on the blockchain. Thanks to stealth addresses, only the sender and receiver can determine where a payment was sent, while an outside observer cannot figure that out.
A Monero user can see incoming transactions with their view key, and anyone without the view key cannot see the incoming transactions to any particular address. This view key can be shared, so Monero can be considered optionally transparent, but the default is stealth.
When a Monero user decides to spend their coins, the Monero in a stealth address is broken down into its components and combined with other equivalent components via ring signatures. For example, if 42.42 Monero is sent, then the coins are split into 40 + 2 + 0.4 + 0.02 and combined with other 40’s, 2’s, 0.4’s, and 0.02’s somewhere else in the blockchain. This renders outputs fundamentally indistinguishable, and Unlike Bitcoin’s CoinJoin, no participation from anyone else is needed since already present outputs are being mixed.
Further, Monero tried to increase decentralization of its network by being incompatible with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) via the CryptoNight protocol. This was originally accomplished by requiring a MB of internal memory, which was unacceptable to ASICs at the time. Also, Monero fit into the L3 cache of modern CPUs, while simultaneously being slower on GPUs, hindering the efficiency of GPU mining firms. That being said, it seems if a cryptocurrency is valuable enough then an ASIC is eventually created for it, and the Monero developers have been in a long term battle where they have to periodically change their mining protocol in order to prevent ASICs from overtaking the network. Monero is expected to release their new mining algorithm, RandomX, in October in order to stomp out the ASICs once again.
It seems the Monero developers are succeeding in their fight against ASIC centralization, and generally Monero is the most profitable cryptocurrency to mine on a personal computer while it is not that profitable with ASICs. This is important because it allows regular joes to mine Monero on their personal computer, decentralizing the network hash rate, as opposed to Bitcoin which is practically impossible to mine on a personal computer and most of the hash rate is in the hands of big mining farms.
Also, Monero uses dynamic block sizes, ensuring low transaction fees and fast confirmation times, as opposed to Bitcoin which often has a clogged mempool which can lead to long waits for confirmations and high transaction fees.
Additionally, Monero technically has an infinite supply since the minimum block reward is 0.6 XMR, and this will be reached in 2040. This ensures that miners will always have an incentive to secure the network long term, even if transaction fees are kept as low as possible. Compare this to Bitcoin where block rewards will approach zero, which may wreck the mining community if transaction fees are not high enough.
Thus, Monero’s ring signatures, RingCT, bulletproofs, and stealth addresses combine to obfuscate the sender, receiver, and amount of the transaction, and transactions are split into chunks that are indistinguishable from other transactions. This provides far more privacy than Bitcoin, since Bitcoin transactions are easily traced on a block explorer. It is clear that Monero is an excellent choice for those that want true anonymity when using cryptocurrency. That being said, it is important to use encrypted messaging as well when organizing a Monero transaction, since anonymity can be compromised if a message regarding a Monero transaction is intercepted.

I'm a teenager. My uncle is a shitty man, abandoned his wife and 2 kids when they were little, and fathered 2 other kids from other women he met after. Pompous boastful prick.
I know of a scam he runs from overhearing my uncle explain his business model to my dad. Dad won't talk about it. I am thinking about telling the government about it.
My uncle has a 3d rendering company, which was failing, but since 2 or 3 years ago he mines bitcoin. His 3d rendering farm became a bitcoin mining operation. He recently started renting a garage and filled it with a bunch of ASICs. Made a deal with the electric company, electricity is cheap where we live. All that under the guise of doing 3d rendering using his company to write off all expenses.
Here is how the scam works as far as I can tell: Funding comes from a rich friend in the Emirates. Uncle mines bitcoin here. Bitcoin is transformed into $ somewhere along the way, not sure how. Funnels the money through Caiman islands. Writes off expenses using his failed 3d rendering company. Not sure of all the details but it is very shady. WIBTA for snitching on my uncle?

• Fiat Currency is backed by Governments/Countries itself. What determines the value of a currency is the economic health, demand, growth, political stability to name a few, of the respective country. Before 1930, most fiat currencies were backed by gold and silver.
• Since 1971, U.S. citizens have been able to utilize Federal Reserve Notes as the only form of money that for the first time had no currency with any gold or silver backing. This is where you get the saying that U.S. dollars are backed by the “full faith and credit” of the U.S. Government - quoted in google.com.
• What backs crypto value is purely supply and demand. The demand creation of a crypto is its sole objective. To create demand, the crypto has to have a purpose. And most purpose commonly promoted is utility. The number of ways you can utilize the said crypto. The more utilization factors the more demand there is for it.
• There are other ways to substantiate value of a crypto and that is to back the crypto with a 1 to 1 ratio in assets or in USD. Then the question is, how 3,000 crypto currencies in circulation be monetary eco sustainable? Can anyone imagine walking into McDonald and view a chart of 3,000 different pricing? Which also means the crypto is a payment gateway pegging against USD instead of bearing any true characteristic of a currency.
• A country’s currency is in its own legit form of legal tender, the only currency acceptable under financial sovereigns of a country. People in the world must be made to understand that. Retailers in Thailand cannot put up products price tags in EUROS/USD, it is illegal. It has to be in Thai Baht.
• It is hardly imaginable for everyone in the world to retail with a Crypto-Currencies at a rate of 7 transactions per second. When mining nodes are reduced due to non-performing mining ratio, mining blocks in the Blockchain will significantly be limited too, rendering delays in transactions while usage increases.
• In time to come, as trends of crypto picks up, Thailand can issue BAHT COIN or UK the STERLING COIN, exactly what China wishes to do. Digital RMB, but would such crypto currencies be fully decentralized? We all have our answers. Absurd to even think of producing Thai Baht, Pound Sterling or Chinese Yuan at the cost of electricity. Γενικά στην ελλάδα τι παίζεται με το mining (bitcoin, dogecoin κτλ) ? Είναι αποδοτικό γενικά και τι γίνεται με το ρεύμα? Does ASIC resistance really lead to decentralization?

Hello Vertcoiners! First of all, let me apologize for my English, its far from perfect. However, I believe you will be able to understand me.
What is this post about? Mostly asic resistance and my issues with it.
I think that vertcoin dev team is one of the most active, hardworking and delivering in cryptocurrency space. The community is great as well with all the support they are giving. That’s why it bothers me to see it all being used for something I believe counterproductive to your goals.
Let me start my argument with what ASIC is. It's a chip created to do a simple task and nothing more. In this case, it does mining or in other words, creating hashes with enough zeros at the beginning. It is much better at this task than CPU or GPU, more cost-effective. Outside of mining certain coin, it is useless.
Your case for asic resistance is that you want everyone to be able to mine with enough efficiency for them to be worth it. Which should make the mining network more decentralized. Lovely idea and until I started to think about it in more detail, I was sold for it too.
The first issue that comes to mind is secret asic. For a chipmaker, it is usually safer to sell chips then to use them for whatever reason they were developed. But with VTC, the situation is different. Public announcement of an asic would mean new mining algorithm for vertcoin and lots of wasted energy and time for the chipmaker. In VTC asic would end up being secret. Way more dangerous than bitcoin scenario. It's better to have one known than one unknown.
I find the probability of this happening fairly low, but still its possible. Economic reasoning is fairly simple. Whoever manages to build them will very likely have no competition. Before the network realizes it, block creation might be almost entirely in hands of one entity.
However, I find this scenario more preferable compared to current situation. Why? Right now VTC is efficiently mineable through multipurpose hardware. Now let's look at some example through known threads to POW. The obvious one is 51% attack. Secret asic owning entity could easily make it happen. What is important is the cost. They would have invested in development and manufacturing of hardware with no other use than mining vertcoin. Quite a costly attack for sure.
How much would it cost now? When all you need is to lend a mining farm or some server from numerous providers around the globe. And you need it only for a few hours to do real harm. And this farm or server owner doesn't care about vertcoin price drop. His hardware can mine hundreds of other coins or render animations for Hollywood. They have no incentive to keep vertcoin intact.
Sorry for not working with numbers, but I find it pretty obvious which approach to mining is more vulnerable to attacks. Please do comment and share your knowledge with me. I will gladly learn something new and can change my mind under good argument. :)

Then the question is, how 3,000 crypto currencies in circulation be monetary eco sustainable? Can anyone imagine walking into McDonald and view a chart of 3,000 different pricing? Which also means the crypto is a payment gateway pegging against USD instead of bearing any true characteristic of a currency.
• A country’s currency is in its own legit form of legal tender, the only currency acceptable under financial sovereigns of a country. People in the world must be made to understand that. Retailers in Thailand cannot put up products price tags in EUROS/USD, it is illegal. It has to be in Thai Baht.
• It is hardly imaginable for everyone in the world to retail with a Crypto-Currencies at a rate of 7 transactions per second. What is a better investment, Bitcoin or Ethereum?

Ethereum.
Before I explain why, I need you to understand something. Bitcoin and Ethereum are at two completely different stages within their potential. They also do not share the exact same mission; therefore, you do have to understand their differences to form an opinion about which one has the biggest use.
Before we look at the coins in detail, let's start with the potential ROI (100% = 2x Original Investment).
Bitcoin’s current market cap is $193,165,354,468 in order for you to make 100% this number would need to double to just under $400 Billion.
Ethereum’s current market cap is $44,715,990,083 , roughly 1/5th of Bitcoins. In order for you to make 100%, the price would need to increase to just under $90 Billion. - This is obviously more probable.
This will not serve as the only variable in making a decision, we now need to break down their uses and differences.
Bitcoin
What is Bitcoin?
A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without the burdens of going through a financial institution. Digital signatures provide part of the solution, but the main benefits are lost if a trusted party is still required to prevent double-spending. We propose a solution to the double-spending problem using a peer-to-peer network. The network timestamps transactions by hashing them into an ongoing chain of hash-based proof-of-work, forming a record that cannot be changed without redoing the proof-of-work. The longest chain not only serves as proof of the sequence of events witnessed, but proof that it came from the largest pool of CPU power. As long as honest nodes control the most CPU power on the network, they can generate the longest chain and outpace any attackers. The network itself requires minimal structure. Messages are broadcasted on a best effort basis, and nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will, accepting the longest proof-of-work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone.
Peer-to-Peer (P2P): is a technical way of saying computers (peers) that are connected together via the internet.
Timestamps: are a sequence of characters that identify exactly when a certain event occurred, giving the exact time and date.
Hashing: is the process of compacting large quantities of data into smaller fixed sizes.
Proof-of-work: is the verification that the individual peer created the said hash
Nodes: are computers that are connected to the blockchain
Bitcoin is a first generation cryptocurrency, that was created in 2009 with the intention to become the currency of the internet.
Its Applications
Safe Haven
Being that billions of people are under the control of a broke economy or volatile dictatorship, Bitcoin is beginning to become a medium in which people within underdeveloped countries feel as a more secure place to store their value.
Remittances
The current operation costs roughly $600B annually, all at the expense of separated families. Bitcoin can now serve as a tool that operates the exact same way and only costs 1/10th of the price.
A transaction on the Bitcoin network also processes faster therefore giving the people a strong reason to make the switch.
Currency
Bitcoin is recognized as an asset, but can also be identified as an efficient currency in which people can buy and exchange with. With this being an application of Bitcoin, as the market continues to decrease in volatility, the use for Bitcoin will increase within businesses and everyday people that transact on a daily basis.
These are just a few, but for the sake of answer length, let’s move onto some of the scalability issues with Bitcoin that hinder my decision of choosing Bitcoin over Ethereum.
Bothering Issues with Bitcoin
Energy
A study from Digiconomist found that each transaction on the Bitcoin blockchain uses 236 KWh worth of electricity, this amount is enough to power 8 U.S households for an entire day.
Scalability
Energy consumption will hinder the scalability issues of Bitcoin, however the other issue that arises with POW mining is that with the increase in cost associated with mining BTC it is less economical to mine Bitcoin. This would limit the distributed nodes (miners) globally and allow a larger percentage of control to the dominant mining pools / farms.
This would lead to a more centralized blockchain, where they can change the rules of BTC as they please.
The supply of Bitcoin is finite, capped at 21 million. Eventually (currently predicted for 2140) Bitcoin's supply will run out. Once this happens, miners will no longer receive rewards for completing blocks but instead will be given fees. The fees will be drastically high in relative terms, and people will stop using the blockchain.
Also, if miners decide that this is uneconomical for them to process the transactions and use their computing power elsewhere the speed of transactions for Bitcoin will drastically slow down, rendering one of the fundamental values of a Bitcoin (speed) useless.
Blue chip Companies
This is more so for all cryptocurrencies, but Bitcoin in particular. It’s not a matter of if but a matter of when a blue-chip company such as Facebook, Amazon or Google decides to implement their own cryptocurrency.
Another possibility is a potential ‘world coin’ which global governments will all agree on using, this may seem unrealistic but it is definitely not impossible and many benefits would arise from having such a currency.
Quantum Computing
Bitcoin is said to be Quantum resistant, on the whitepaper it mentions that:
‘To compensate for increasing hardware speed and varying interest in running nodes over time, the proof-of-work difficulty is determined by a moving average targeting an average number of blocks per hour. If they're generated too fast, the difficulty increases.’
This may seem quantum resistant but it is important to understand that the difficulty is changed every 10 minutes and this is more than enough time for QC to mine all of Bitcoin’s remaining coins.
Bitcoin Bubble
The last point of this section is to recognize that the Bitcoin bubble could pop loud enough to crash the market. Due to a whole lot of hype, and even more speculative and uneducated buyers, Bitcoin could face a peak in which a simple spark
Ethereum
What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is an open source platform with the mission to build and inspire next-generation decentralized applications. In other words, the applications being built on the Ethereum network would have no middle men. Users are able to interact safely with social and financial systems to transact peer to peer, therefore opening a new realm of opportunity within decentralized development on specifically the exchange of value.
Like the Bitcoin network exchanges Bitcoin, applications within the Ethereum network would exchange ETHER. Therefore, making the Ethereum network have its own digital currency or, cryptocurrency that these decentralized applications would run on.
On the Ethereum network, developers are able to build these decentralized applications simply, within this seemingly complicated new technology. Think of it as Shopify or Volusion, these are centralized networks in which users/developers can build e-commerce stores more efficiently and cost effectively.
Ethereum is similar in this aspect, the network was essentially created to assist and fuel the growth of decentralized blockchain applications within its network.
Smart Contracts
Now, what Ethereum is based on, is a thing called “Smart Contracts”
Developers are extremely excited about this tool, a smart contract is similar to how it sounds, it’s a digital contract that self-executes… Think of it as a virtual vending machine.
A smart contract is a digital contract between two people in which the technology or tool handles the management, performance, enforcement and payment of the agreement. The smart contract has its own digital bank account of ETHER and settles once the product is received or the service is completed therefore greatly improving the efficiency of data tracking, payment processing and user friendliness of each decentralized application.
Let’s dive into an example
Music
The first age of the internet brought quite a bit of disruption to the music industry… Idk if you knew, but if you we’re a songwriter 25 years ago and produced a hit song that got a million singles you would acquire royalties of up to $50,000. Now if you were to produce a hit song that gets a million streams you don’t get $50,000, you get $45… Enough to cover the first round at the bar.
In result, musicians are now finding other ways to produce revenue with their music. One being the utilization of a blockchain ecosystem like Ethereum. Music applications are now being built for musicians to reclaim their content, smart contracts are being implemented into the music itself, therefore the music protects the intellectual property rights of the artist.
You want to listen to the song? It’s free… or maybe a few micro pennies to download. You want to put the song in your video or movie? Make it your ringtone? These each cost a different price and presented at the point of purchase would be its underlying IP rights for the use of that piece of music.
Musicians are absolutely hyped about this because now, the song becomes a business. It’s out there on this platform marketing itself, protecting the rights of the author and because the song has a payment system; in the sense of a bank account, all of the money then flows back to the artist, and they control the industry rather than these powerful intermediaries.
This concept could apply not only to just songwriters but any creator of content, from art, to inventions, to scientific discoveries or the work from independent journalists. There are endless industries in which people do not gain fair compensation in which the underlying technology of Ethereum could benefit in a big way.
Other examples:
· A smart contract can be created to pay a worker for every hour they work, they log their hours on the blockchain and then after verification the funds are instantly transferred to them
· Buying goods internationally can be tracked and verified – reducing fraud.
· Property buying can be facilitated through the contract
· Every industry that has a contract in place will be able to use the blockchain of Ethereum
It is also worth noting that Ethereum is also a lot quicker than Bitcoin, average block time being 15 seconds for Ethereum opposed to 10 minutes for Bitcoin.
Personally, I am invested into both. If I HAD to choose, like I said it would be Ethereum simply because of where it is now in comparison to its potential as well as its very transparent, direct, opportunistic mission towards the hosting of decentralized blockchain applications.

[Long] In defense of the idea of "post-scarcity"... kinda

It has come to my attention that on this subreddit and many others, the idea of humanity becoming a "post scarcity society" is seen as laughable, and its proponents pitiful and uneducated.
It is not difficult to see why people would think this. Right now, we live in a world of consumer capitalism, which is characterized by private ownership of the means of production, wage labour, and the exchange of goods and services on a market as opposed to a planned economy. Market economies generally create price points through the ever alternating conditions of supply and demand, that is the higher the demand and the lower the supply of a good, the higher the price will be and sometimes vice versa. Now, in this capitalist market system, value is dictated by this principle of supply and demand, and so an imperative precondition for capitalism is the scarcity of resources. If there were no or little resource scarcity, it would be impossible for any market system, including capitalism, to function at all.
With that said...
Throughout human history we have gained ever easier and more convenient access to resources. The earliest example of this was during the neolithic revolution, where hunter-gather tribes were settling down and beginning to invest their time majorly in agriculture, but also in the area of crafts. This dawn of civilization brought with it many perks for the human race. People no longer needed to hunt for food, and had a sense of safety in their respective community. At the end of it, humanity had much greater access to resources than they did in paleolithic times - this was also of course the advent of the division of labour.
The next big "jump" we made as a race was during the industrial revolution, where the combine harvester made many agrarians redundant, so they flooded to the cities to work in factories, this was the beginning of commodity production. Good that previously only the wealthy could afford were now available to the masses because factories were so efficient in their production. The resource we used for power at the time was steam and coal, which gave us electricity.
Recently we have had another big leap as a civilization. The internet has given us near limitless access to cheap and free information that has led to a boom in the education sector. These days, anyone can gain a new skill by taking an online course or simply through self learning.
Today we are beginning to transition away from fossil fuels and into renewable energy in a big way, and this is only going to become evermore the case. But here's the thing with renewables, they are self sufficient, they require little resources to maintain and run. Renewables thus have a net marginal cost of near zero in the long term. And on top of that, with experimental nuclear projects such as the ITER project and various governments mandating the research of MSRs, there are even more ways to generate energy than ever before.
Energy is becoming more and more abundant, setting the precedent for post-scarcity.
However, its not just about energy, its also about information and resources. We are making technological strides in areas of agriculture, in nanotechnology, and in so many other areas. There is an experimental method of recycling that exists called molecular sorting, whereby waste is taken and, via nanotechnology, disassembled into its individual components to be reused for other stuff. Countries like Japan are investing heavily in vertical farming, which if we were going for post scarcity could generate an abundance of food for the population in combination with the synthesizing of meat and dairy produce. Food has the same problem as energy, you use it or you lose it, at least today. However, imagine having massive storage containers positioned next to your nearest vertical farm that would cryogenically freeze most of the food produced on the urban farm, a "food battery" if you will. It would take a lot of energy, sure, but with what I have previously stated I think we've got that covered. And of course, there's water. With water I find we kind of have a paradox, Earth is 70% water yet many countries have dire water shortages. Of course I don't need to worry since I live in the UK where weather conditions are mostly favorable in this case, but that's besides the point. Desalination is becoming a big thing now, and its not hard to see why. With this technology, we can filter out saline seawater into drinkable water quite effectively, and it has served some nations such as Israel quite well, and also in parts of California in the US. It's a technology that can be used rather strategically, and can address much of the world's issues with access to clean water. Not to mention if you engineered your desalination plant in a certain way it could double as a hydro plant for electricity.
Oh yeah, not to mention a list of things like advances in robotics, AI, asteroid mining, fusion rockets, warp drives (we can create negative effective mass now btw), VR, AR, MagLev trains, and so on and so forth.
That leaves a couple of things left. The first is housing. Of course no matter how much you try to think otherwise, and unless you've built a Dyson ring, you can pretty much assume that land is inherently scarce.
But contrary to what you might think, this isn't actually a problem at all. There is an organisation called the vertical city institute which is based in China. It's proposal is simple. New cities should be built vertically and not horizontally. The structure or multiple of them would be built spacious enough so that the inhabitants would feel like they have enough space, and elements of nature such as vegetation would be integrated into the city design giving people access to green spaces even when they are on the 100th floor.
The specifications don't go into too much detail, but I have played around with the idea in my head and have came up with a few additions. I personally am a big fan of modular design. With the conception of so-called "Smart apartments" today, people are able to fit more and more stuff inside less and less space. This concept got me thinking, what if we took this idea to the extreme a little? Imagine a 10 metre x 10 metre room. Inside the walls of this room are decently sized storage spaces. Say you wanted the whole living space to be a lounge, you would retrieve a sofa of your choosing from the storage spaces in the walls of this space, maybe some lamps and a coffee table. Now imagine you don't want this living space to be a lounge anymore, you want it to be a personal gym instead, the same principle would apply. With the right automation technology such as robotics, you could change the setting of your living space repetitively, and this would render things like 10-bed mansions obsolete; in fact with this idea you essentially have all the functionality of a mansion inside one room. Privacy isn't an issue either since if you have multiple people staying in one of these living spaces, you could spit the room into multiple sections, and these could have different independent settings of their own.
But wheat about access to nature? There's one big advantage I haven't discussed about vertical cities. Building cities this way saves a ton of land, that could be used for recreational space or even further agriculture outside of the cities. This has the positive knock on effect of not disturbing nature and thus nurturing further biodiversity.
There's one last thing I want to address in this discussion, and that is resource allocation. Now you may be thinking "if you need to allocate resources in any specific way then you haven't achieved post-scarcity", and this is true to some extent. Let me confuse you a little, despite all I have talked about in this post, scarcity is something that is inevitable in a finite universe. In addition, if goods are being produced in ubiquity, but no one can access them, then that creates scarcity - and so you have to do something about it.
You can distribute goods in a variety of ways, the most high tech of them being via automated drones. The big question though is how you allocate those goods and resources. The answer to that problem may come closer than you might think. The technology behind bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, the blockchain, has many alternate uses. In combination with the internet of things, a more advanced form of the blockchain could be used as a decentralized network that would catalog the earth's resources and distribute them via request. This AI driven "resource management system" would not govern people, but would instead be subservient to people's everyday needs.
The amalgamation of all what I have stated above would not create "post-scarcity", that much is impossible since we live in a finite universe. However, it is possible to create such thing as a "perceived post scarcity" or "access abundance" as I like to call it, through the methods stated above.
Possible counter-arguments:
Human population: I predict that as the third world gains access to healthcare, education, and reproductive facilities, the world population will stabilize eventually leading to a situation where we have gradually more resources per head; I do not predict any exponential growth in the world population.
Extraordinary requests/hoarding etc: Obvious nonsense requests for resources will be rejected unless they have a valid reason, this could be decided through democratic means. Also, its unlikely anyone would hoard since it wouldn't benefit them, as with access abundance they would always have access to the things they need or want.

The Quiet Room.

Keoni was a bit of a weird one, even when we were young. Everybody else thought so. He was highly energetic, easily distracted, and was always running off in every direction like he was looking for something. Like a kite without a string.
 
He talked weird too. He crammed hundreds of words into a single sentence, and you'd be lucky to squeeze in a remark or two. It put most people off, and I kind of understand that. What do you do when a guy appears out of nowhere and blabs on nonstop for two minutes without making eye contact?
 
But the one time he did it to me, I wasn't that fussed. I've always been a listener, always been the quiet one. Not that I was shy or whatever, but I just preferred to open my mouth when I actually had something interesting to say.
 
"Bipedal robots look cool in Gundam," he said. "But they are highly impractical in real life. Traversal algorithms would be difficult, as you reach non-flat surfaces."
 
I nodded. "Interesting," I said. "Tell me more."
 
He sucked on his lollipop, taking a quick moment to flick through his messy, curly black hair. "See, you also have to account for gyroscopic calculations just so your mecha stands up…and don't even get me started on the Buster Rifle…"
 
And he went on. For a full two hours.
 
When he finished, the sun had fully set on the horizon. My back ached from sitting down, but I didn't mind - I found him really, really interesting. Which is rare when you live on a bumfuck country town where everyone only ever talks about mining. But here he was, talking about giant robots and beam sabers, and automatons like he was some sort of expert on the topic. He moved on to astronomy, then to Pluto, then to Charon, then to Greek mythology, and you could feel his brain crackle from the leaps it made.
 
When he snapped out of his trance, he stared at me for a full five seconds before he said, "You're Karl, right? You're cool. You're cool-Karl. Cool, cool Karl. You wanna catch some bugs?"
 
 
We turned into really good friends after that. Keoni was my only friend after that. I wasn't really that sociable, but I always found him fascinating. He kept his weird edge all throughout high school, even through the bullying that he suffered. He brushed it all off, like it was a minor inconvenience. Like he had better things to do, better things to think about.
 
And he did. He flew through classes and aced his grades, ate his syllabus like he had a perpetual hunger. He joined every club, excelled at everything you could throw at him - literature, film, music - hell, he even killed it at home economics. He would get popular for a while - everybody loves a high-achiever - but then they'd back off once they discovered how…different he was.
 
One time, he ran to my desk while I was taking notes. He was huffing, but he had a mad glint in his eye. "I did it," he said, in between gasps of breath. "You should come."
 
I raised my eyebrows at him. I knew where this was going. "What did you do, and what are you dragging me into?"
 
His lips curled into a wicked smile. He took a deep breath. "Year 12 is running a Pure Math class and it's really interesting and they weren't too excited about having a Year 8 take it but I convinced them anyway and I think we should go because it would be a challenge-"
 
I sighed. "Keoni, man. Pure Math is really heavy, and I'm not sure if I'm ready for it. Should we just chill out, maybe?"
 
His head lowered all of a suddenly, like he was suddenly deflated. "But, Karl…" he whispered. "Please? I just need to do something, man. Please come."
 
There was a terrible ache in the way that he said that. So I said yes. His face broke into glee, and he ran out of the room with big skips in his step. At that point, I realized that Keoni didn't do things because he wanted to. He did it because he had to, because his being relied on his need to throw his brain against something.
 
For the first time, I wondered about his happiness as a person. How he would be, if he ran out of things to do. And for some unknown reason, I felt myself become terrified.
 
 
I saw the ugly side of it as we neared the end of the senior term. Keoni was idly typing on a keyboard, as I stepped inside his room. It was a mess - with assorted notes on sheets of paper strewn around like dead leaves. Corkboards with pictures and art and schematics. Ephemera of his overactive mind.
 
"What's doing?" I asked him. He was hunched over his seat, with an incredible boredom looming over his face. He turned his head to face me, but he didn't stop typing. "Neural network," he said with a flat voice. "It's a new system for poker machines. At the same time, I'm refactoring the algo to see if I can use it to render 8-bit versions of our school's photos."
 
"That sounds overly complicated and incredibly stupid," I said.
 
He shrugged. "I know. I know."
 
"Then why do you do it?" I asked.
 
Suddenly, he stopped typing and bent his head against his knees. His shoulders shook, as he gripped on his shins tightly. I could hear stifled sobbing.
 
"I'm just…I'm just so fucking bored, man", he said in a faltering voice. "I'm running out of things to do. I love this place and all, but I just…I just…fuck, dude."
 
I saw him cry for the first time, and I didn't know what to do. I awkwardly put an arm around him. He brushed it off completely. I tried again, and he let it stay longer this time. As he curled up and wept, I wondered if under all of his raw capability, he was just a kid who wanted toys to play with.
 
He looked up at me with his reddened eyes and said, "Karl…am I broken? I'm quickly realizing that I may be broken as a human being."
 
I shook my head. "No man," I said. "You just live in the moments when you're tackling something new and bigger than you."
 
He chuckled. "That sounds pretty fucked up, relative to normal people."
 
"Well, normal is boring anyway," I replied. I walked towards his window and yanked the venetian blinds open. Sat on it, so that my head was completely outside. It opened to a busy intersection where cars buzzed by. No doubt, a small source of interest for him. I lit a cigarette, and we sat together in silence, trying to digest the past ten minutes.
 
"I have a job offer in Melbourne, by the way," he suddenly piped up. "I think I'm going to take it."
 
I raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? When does it start?" I asked.
 
"Tomorrow," he said, smiling.
 
And that was the last time I saw him happy.
 
 
Life went on, if somehow with a big chunk of it missing. The problem with having a few people in your life is that you immediately feel it when they're gone. If you are the average of the people you know closely, then half of me has been taken out.
 
But I walked forward anyway. I had an easy time through college, thanks to Keoni dragging me through advanced courses. I found a job rather quickly too. But I never found anyone who could engage me or fascinate me as much as he did.
 
Keoni would send me small batches of email, every few months. They would be short, to the point, and would contain scant information about how he was doing. I've been able to assemble a picture from the scraps though: he had an interesting job, with interesting problems to solve - something to do with cryptocurrency. He was working on improving calculation algorithms for bitcoin farms. He got paid well. He lived well. The city was endlessly interesting for now, and that was all that mattered to him.
 
And then the emails stopped for half a year.
 
When I next heard about him, it was from the police. He was in the hospital after sustaining grave injuries. And while they couldn't figure it out at first, they eventually realized that he kept saying one thing, again and again.
 
It was my name.
 
 
The Royal Melbourne Hospital is a good three hours from Ararat, and I drove as fast as I could to get there in the middle of the night. The police didn't give me any more information, besides the fact that he was critically injured. I assumed the worst, as I barreled through the highways, through the quiet backroads of Victoria.
 
As soon as I reached the hospital, I sprinted upstairs, towards the reception. A tired nurse took my details. I told her that I was here for a friend, and that I was called by the police. "His name is Keoni Brown," I said. "He's a friend of mine."
 
Her eyes widened. "Oh god," she gasped quietly. "Okay. It's just in 7 South. Bed 21. The police officers should be on standby…"
 
I made my way there as fast as I could. Immediately, I was greeted by two police officers - dressed in their dark blues, wearing a tactical vest. They had a tired look in their eyes. "Are you Karl Williams?" the taller one said. I nodded.
 
"I'm Acting Inspector Reynolds, and this is First Constable Hughes," he said. "Your friend, Keoni Brown, was found locked in a container unit in Docklands after we followed an anonymous tip…"
 
"What?" I said.
 
"Listen," he said softly. "He's in there right now. But I have to warn you sir…he's in a bad way. He's sedated right now."
 
I nodded. They walked me through. And there he was.
 
He was lying down on the hospital bed, half of his body covered with bandages. It covered his eyes and his ears. Flecks of dried blood on the side of his neck. Where his hands would be, was a stub that ended abruptly, shortly from his elbow. Meanwhile, Inspector Reynolds gave me the details, as if he was reading from a list in his head. "They gouged his eyes out. Eardrums ruptured. Amputated below the wrist. Amputated tongue..."
 
What the hell happened?
 
 
Later on, Inspector Reynolds took me to a pub across the street. He walked me to a quiet corner, then moved to the bar to order me a couple of slugs of whiskey. I sat down and drained the glasses as fast as I could.
 
"Do you know anyone that could have done this?" Reynolds asked. "Enemies, people he's had trouble with…?"
 
"No…" I shook my head. "Just…yeah, no. We've…we've been out of touch for a while. I can't…I can't even imagine how anyone could do this to him…"
 
All the while, the sight of him in the hospital bed replayed in my head. The catalogue of injuries that Reynolds mentioned was assembling the parts of him I couldn't see. The human instinct is to make sense of things as fast as possible, but nothing was registering. I felt numb.
 
"Do you have any leads?" I asked.
 
"We've heard a couple of things…" Reynolds said. "That he was working with the mob, moving money for them. We have a pretty good idea of who it might be, but if you could give us more information, that would be of help."
 
I shook my head once more. "Tell me where you found him," I said.
 
"I don't think you want to be there," Reynolds said. "I'll give you the information if you really want it, but you really don't want to be there."
 
"I want to see it. I want to see everything that they did to him," I said.
 
Reynolds shook his head. "You don't understand, Karl," he said. "They kept him at that place, in this way, for three whole months…"
 
 
It's a short cab ride to the docks from the hospital. It was the middle of the night, and the streets were largely empty, save for the occassional truck passing by. Lonely yellow sodium lights flickered through the pedestrian walkways, replaced by harsh white lights as I made my way to the stacks of container boxes.
 
They were stacked high, rusted on the sides, flecked with peeling paint. Looming over everything like forgotten towers. Finally, I found the place.
 
It was a container box like any other; save for the unlocked bolts and yellow tape marking it as a crime scene. I ripped the tape away and unlatched the bolts holding the doors together, and then I swung it open…
 
It stank like something rotten. In the middle of the box was a cross, with leather braces, fitted for the torso, arms, and legs. Dried blood on the places where the arms and the head should be. A small tube ran from the side, close to where the head was. Dried flecks of something - oatmeal? gruel? - coagulated on the end. A pile of dried feces right below the cross.
 
He was kept here for three months…
 
And immediately, against my will, everything pieced itself together in my head. How Keoni was kept here, rendered incapable of seeing anything, hearing anything, saying anything at all. How his hands were rendered useless. How he was fed and kept alive in the dark, how his head was starved of any input whatsoever…for a whole three months.
 
I immediately ran outside. Found it suddenly difficult to breathe. And then I saw something else. On the inside of the doors was spray-painted:

STORY OF THE WEEK

• On June 26th, 2019 at 20:45 UTC, Coinbase was hit with an outage amidst high volatility. The platform was rendered inaccessible on mobile and desktop browsers until 9:17 UTC where it was back to being operational. During this time, the price of Bitcoin experienced a downturn and users could not have access to there funds store in Coinbase wallets.

CRYPTOCURRENCY TRADING SERVICES

Huobi Global aims to expand operations to service Turkish users. By the end of 2019, the exchange plans to offer a crypto-to-fiat onramp, localized products and dedicated customer service.
Bitfinex launches margin derivatives trading for cryptocurrencies. Qualified Bitfinex account holders will be able to trade a new hedging product through a derivatives wallet, utilizing USDt-based collateral and up to 100x leverage.
• Indian based crypto exchange Koinex ceases operations over regulatory challenges. The exchange plans to refund frozen deposits to bank accounts over the next 5 weeks. Users are asked to empty their cryptocurrency wallets by July 15th, 2019.
• Irish cryptocurrency exchange Bitsane suspected of an exit scam worth millions in euros. The platform went offline on June 17, 2019 and its Twitter and Facebook accounts have since been deleted.
• Singaporean exchange Bitrue gets hacked, losing 9.3 million Ripple (XRP) and 2.5 million Cardano (ADA) extracted from its hot wallets.

REGULATION

• The CFTC has approved bitcoin derivatives provider LedgerX to offer physically settled bitcoin futures contracts. On June 25th, 2019 LedgerX received a designated contract market licence DCM) which allows them to offer the new futures contracts.
• The Europol arrested six individuals arrested over a “typo squatting” scam where a well-known cryptocurrency exchange (unnamed) was cloned in order to attain access to unsuspecting victim’s cryptocurrency wallets.
• The government of Iran puts pressure on power grids and forcing officials to cut off supplies to cryptocurrency mining farms. The Iran Power Ministry is considering enforcing a tariff on miners and over 1,000 bitcoin miners have already been seized from two mining farms.

TECHNOLOGY

Opera releases “Opera Touch”, a browser with a built-in crypto wallet. This lets user interact seamlessly with dApps built on the Ethereum blockchain and supports all ERC-20 tokens, stablecoins and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
Overstock’s tZero launches a digital wallet and exchange app for cryptocurrencies on IOS. The new app, dubbed “tZero Crypto” claims to be hack-resistant for trading and storing cryptocurrencies. Initially, the application will support Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

INSTITUTIONALIZATION

Apex Crypto – a subsidiary of Apex Clearing, a SEC-registered financial clearing and execution company have launched a trading platform for broker-dealers and financial advisors. The platform will support trading for Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ether (ETH) and Litecoin (LTC). PEOPLE
• Cryptocurrency exchange Gemini hires five former employees of Coinbase whom was working on an individual focused cryptocurrency trading solution which has since shut down as of April 2019. The new hires will be focused on the exchange’s professional trading platform and custody solution.
